A half-day trip from Phnom Penh that visits Phnom Penh, Bus/coach, Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. It does not cover killing fields entrance fee: $3, genocide museum (s-21) entrance fee: $5 and total entrance fees: $8, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price. Tuol Sleng was a Phnom Penh secondary school that the Khmer Rouge turned into Security Prison 21 in 1975. Of the roughly 12,000 to 20,000 people held there, a dozen or so survived. The classrooms still have the iron bed frames and the photographs the regime took of every prisoner on arrival. Choeung Ek, about 15 kilometres out, is where most were taken to be killed, and its stupa holds some 5,000 skulls; the audio guide there is narrated in part by a survivor and is the reason most visitors manage it at all. Both are done quietly, take about half a day together, and are not suitable for young children. Priced per person at about $24 each, so a party of 6 comes to $141. Chhim our tourguide was a pleasure to spend the day with . His historic knowledge was very good and he shared many detailed facts and figures. Whilst the main content was harrowing his clear delivery was respectful sharing his clear emotion with ours. Excellent tour that led us through one of Cambodia’s darkest periods. Martin patiently explained all the factors that led to the emergence of the Khemer Rouge and the consequences for Cambodia. Drawing on experiences within his greater family it was a fascinating and sobering experience. Thoroughly recommend it.
