Full description
This is a 3-hour experience in Phnom Penh, built around Central Market Phnom Penh and Phnom Penh Night Market. It is run by Authentic Cambodia Experience, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Khmer food is milder than Thai and sourer than Vietnamese, built on prahok fermented fish paste and on kroeung, a lemongrass, galangal, turmeric and kaffir-lime paste pounded fresh. The dish everyone is taught is fish amok, a coconut curry steamed in a banana-leaf cup until it sets like a custard; lok lak, pepper-seared beef with a lime-and-pepper dipping sauce, is the other. Kampot pepper, which has a protected origin, turns up in both. Classes usually start in a market, where the guide walks you through the fermented fish, the palm sugar and the river fish before anything is cooked.

Martin was an amazing guide, who took his time to explain the history and culture of each place we went to. We truly felt like we got a good understanding of the life in Cambodia, its story and its people. Martin was an excellent guide. In a short few hours he told us about the history of Cambodia and he showed us many relevant sights related to the history. We tried some street food with him . As he is a local he knew all the best places to eat and what to avoid. The tour gave us a great start to our time in Phnom Penh. I wish we had time to do one of Martins other tours in town.
This is one of the best tours we've done in the whole of South East Asia. Our guide, Martin, was so knowledgeable. He told us great stories at each stop about Cambodia's history. He even shared personal stories and told us how much the country has changed. It was these stories that made the tour truly stand out. Martin never rushed us, and gave us plenty of time to ask questions. We wish Martin could be our tour guide everywhere we go.
