Phnom Penh’s Hands-On Khmer Cooking Class in the Countryside
Full description
This is a 4-hour experience in Phnom Penh. It is run by Meet The Province, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Khmer food is milder than Thai and sourer than Vietnamese, built on prahok fermented fish paste and on kroeung, a lemongrass, galangal, turmeric and kaffir-lime paste pounded fresh. The dish everyone is taught is fish amok, a coconut curry steamed in a banana-leaf cup until it sets like a custard; lok lak, pepper-seared beef with a lime-and-pepper dipping sauce, is the other. Kampot pepper, which has a protected origin, turns up in both. Classes usually start in a market, where the guide walks you through the fermented fish, the palm sugar and the river fish before anything is cooked.
The price covers Pick-up at Areyksat Ferry Station, market tour, Organic garden tour, Hands-on cooking class and Bottled water. It does not cover Public ferry ticket and Hotel pickup, so budget for those separately. I have been living in Phnom Penh for a month, and this was by far the best thing I have done here. There were 7 of us - Sophorsyim & her son picked us up from the ferry, took us to the market where we got fresh ingredients, then took us to her beautiful garden where we picked fresh herbs and banana leaves ready for our fish amok. We arrived at her lovely house and were greeted by her wonderful family, and we all just had the best time cooking together. We were told all about the ingredients and the recipes, and spent the whole night laughing together. I will be doing this with anyone who comes
This experience far exceeded my expectations! From the beginning the communication and organization was very thorough. Sophor and her wonderful family were all very welcoming and funny. This did not feel like a tour or a cooking class but more like just hanging out with a wonderful local family and eating great food!

I had such a wonderful time with Sophors and her family learning to cook traditional Khmer food. The class was very hands on and I learned new cooking techniques like how to make coconut cream. It was a lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere and my hosts really looked after me and welcomed me into their home. This was one of my favourite things I’ve done on my travels and I would definitely recommend.

This was by far the most memorable part of our trip! Sophors not only gives you the most authentic & generous experience but we felt so lucky to be able to experience her beautiful home, cooking and generosity of spirit. She let us into her life, family and it actually transcended just a cooking class. It felt like visiting a family friend. Personal, familiar and joyful but also completely real & down to earth. The best time and hope to keep in touch with her!
Sophors was an amazing host. I’m so happy I did the activity. You got a real feel for the Cambodian countryside as it’s based in her home. Learnt so much about the food and then got to try the tasty food. If you are thinking about it just book it :)
It was awesome to learn about Khmer cuisine, and the food we cooked was the best I have had in Cambodia. The real highlight though was our host Sophors and her family. She really made us feel part of her family, which is always the most rewarding experience you can have whilst travelling I think. It was also fun to catch the local ferry across the river, just ask one of the ferry workers for which boat to get on.
Brilliant- we have done a variety of cooking classes in the past and this was the best. So much more than a cooking class but being welcomed into our hosts home and spending time with her family. A cultural, warm, educational and authentic evening- thank you so much- we loved getting to know you and all your family 😍

Sophor was very accomodating all throughout the activity. She even bought us some fruits to taste. We had amok, an eggplant dish, soup, and a banana desert. Unfortunately, we werent able to go to the garden due to the renovations. Looking forward to go back for a different activity.
