The outlying temples take a half or full day of driving and repay it with emptiness. Beng Mealea, about 60 kilometres east, is a 12th-century temple of Angkor Wat's scale left largely uncleared, crossed on walkways over collapsed galleries. Koh Ker, two hours north-east, was briefly the capital in the 10th century and has Prasat Thom, a seven-tiered sandstone pyramid 36 metres high that you can climb by a wooden stair. Sambor Prei Kuk, listed by UNESCO in 2017, is older than Angkor itself, pre-Angkorian brick towers standing in forest. Some of these sites carry their own separate admission on top of the Angkor Pass. The price steps with party size rather than multiplying: 1 traveller is $163, 5 is $520 and 8 is $832. I had a marvellous trip with our driver Vuthy, he was very thoughtful and told me a lot about cambodian culture. He helped me to find a way through the temples and to stand the heat with refreshments and cool towels. The temples are absolutely worthwhile the trip, very beautiful and not so crowded. This was a great tour! Our guide, Mr. Sophea, did a fantastic job of providing all the history behind the temples we visited and showing us the best spots to take photographs from at them. I would strongly recommend this tour to anyone who’s seen the Angkor Wat complex and wants to travel far outside Siem Reap to see Cambodia’s beautiful countryside and the other temples the country has to offer.
