This is a 6-hour experience in Siem Reap. It is run by Angkor Wat Travel Tour, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and it reverses direction twice a year: in the monsoon the Mekong pushes water back up the Tonle Sap river and the lake swells several times over, then drains again from about November. The villages on it live with that. Kampong Phluk's stilt houses stand six to ten metres up on their legs, dry underneath in March and wading depth in October; Kampong Khleang is larger, further out and far less visited; Chong Kneas is closest to Siem Reap and the most touristed. Which village works, and whether the boat can reach the flooded forest at all, depends entirely on the month.

I visited the floating village of Kampong Phluk. While the Angkor Wat temple complex is wonderful, I felt this was another spot in Siem Reap that simply shouldn't be missed. I sincerely hope the people living there can continue to lead peaceful lives. My guide, Meng, was knowledgeable and a really fun guy.
