A full-day trip from Siem Reap that visits Krong Siem Reap, River boat, Tonlé Sap and Prek Toal Floating Village. There are 8 stops altogether, so it fills the day rather than leaving long gaps between two or three highlights. The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and it reverses direction twice a year: in the monsoon the Mekong pushes water back up the Tonle Sap river and the lake swells several times over, then drains again from about November. The villages on it live with that. Kampong Phluk's stilt houses stand six to ten metres up on their legs, dry underneath in March and wading depth in October; Kampong Khleang is larger, further out and far less visited; Chong Kneas is closest to Siem Reap and the most touristed. Which village works, and whether the boat can reach the flooded forest at all, depends entirely on the month. The price steps with party size rather than multiplying: 1 traveller is $441, 5 is $1,229 and 8 is $1,966. You are quoted the total for your party, not a per-head rate. The bird sanctuary is a sight to behold. Watch tower is great and means the larger birds are flying right infront of you. Chicks still on the nests as shown by our helpful and knowledgeable boat driver. With fish splashing, birds hunting and almost no litter this must be what Cambodia was like years ago. Going through the floating villages gave a great insight into local life. Eating at one of the self sustaining projects was great. I'm not especially interested in birds, to be honest. But I really had a great time visiting Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. Scooting around Tonle Sap in a private boat is great fun, and the birds are just amazing, unlike anything I'd ever seen before. The visit to the floating village was also quite interesting. We ate lunch at the floating village, at a restaurant attached to a museum. The village is one that actually floats, as opposed to one on stilts. On the itinerary it said we would visit a market upon returning to Siem Reap, but instead we visited a temple. I was happy about this, as the tem
