The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and it reverses direction twice a year: in the monsoon the Mekong pushes water back up the Tonle Sap river and the lake swells several times over, then drains again from about November. The villages on it live with that. Kampong Phluk's stilt houses stand six to ten metres up on their legs, dry underneath in March and wading depth in October; Kampong Khleang is larger, further out and far less visited; Chong Kneas is closest to Siem Reap and the most touristed. Which village works, and whether the boat can reach the flooded forest at all, depends entirely on the month. The price steps with party size rather than multiplying: 1 traveller is $572, 5 is $1,294 and 8 is $2,070. You are quoted the total for your party, not a per-head rate. Tara Riverboat runs it. My wife and I were the only guests so we had the boat to ourselves Very nice that we still travelled. Other companies might have cancelled with only two guests We were still made welcome and given space to do our own thing. That was nice as we had spent the previous few days on tours and needed a rest. More than enough food and drinks were there for us. Could have given 5 stars but it wasn’t perfect But still good and worth doing
It was relaxing but very overpriced to actually shorten the drive by 1 hour to replace it by 4 1/2 of boating with not much to see…
The 1st part, from Siem Reap to the Prek Kdam area is a long 5 hour 300km drive. Then the cruise, 4hrs meandering down the river. So you get some 25kms of time on board one of their three boats. Lunch is prepared and served. Quite simple but tasty. Samieth, our guide was a very nice and helpful person with whom we had a good conversation about all sorts of issues. Upon arrival in Phnom Penh a tuk tuk is provided for the transfer to your hotel. La voiture n’était pas vraiment une voiture de luxe. Très bon chauffeur gentil et prévenant. Le bateau était prévu pour 20 personnes au moins et nous étions les seuls passagers. Personnel charmant à bord avec un repas succinct mais correct. En bref, un rapport qualité-prix peu satisfaisant
Am besten fanden wir die Flusskreuzfahrt. Trotzdem wir nur zu zweit an Bord kamen, wurde uns das komplette Barbecue serviert. Besonders unser Guide Samieth war sehr freundlich und er hat uns viel gezeigt und erklärt. Ein tolles Erlebnis!
