A half-day experience in Siem Reap. The operator sums it up as kompong pluk floating village. The price covers Tour guide, Transportation and Big boat. The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and it reverses direction twice a year: in the monsoon the Mekong pushes water back up the Tonle Sap river and the lake swells several times over, then drains again from about November. The villages on it live with that. Kampong Phluk's stilt houses stand six to ten metres up on their legs, dry underneath in March and wading depth in October; Kampong Khleang is larger, further out and far less visited; Chong Kneas is closest to Siem Reap and the most touristed. Which village works, and whether the boat can reach the flooded forest at all, depends entirely on the month. Priced per person at about $20 each, so a party of 8 comes to $156. They were late picking us up, but the tour was pretty decent. Would have liked to of learned more about the village from the guide, but it was overall relaxing.

Our guide was excellent, really kind and informative. However, we went during dry season and it was a bit funny because the streets were all accessible by foot rather than boat so felt a bit strange just walking along a street and staring into people’s houses as a tour. The alligator farm was cruel and quite upsetting to see as none of the animals had adequate space. I’d say the tour is definitely worth it during wet season but during dry season, maybe not so much.
