Battambang is Cambodia's second city and the calmest of them, a riverside town of French shophouses about three hours from Siem Reap. The bamboo train, the norry, is a bamboo platform on wheels driven by a small motor down a single track; when two meet, the lighter one is lifted off the rails by hand. The original line at O Dambong was replaced by a purpose-built tourist track at Banan. At dusk, millions of wrinkle-lipped bats stream out of a cliff cave at Phnom Sampeau for about half an hour in an unbroken ribbon, and the same hill carries a killing-cave memorial from the Khmer Rouge years. LItchie was a fantastic guide. Just the two of us in his tuk tuk. He stopped along the way and gave information on all sorts of things not included in the tour, we learnt about different plants, vegetables, spit swallows and much more. The trip to the temples on the mountain and the flying out of the bats were definitely the highlight. We had no idea that there are between 2-7 million bats that fly out and that this goes on for about 40 minutes it was incredible to watch. LItchie kept us well hydrated throughout the day with ice cold water and some fruit to snack on. The train ride was fun too
