Detaillierter Ablauf

Day 1, 10:30

Meeting and briefing

Meet your guide at the Fujinomiya 5th station (2,400m). Gear check, a talk through the route and pacing, and time to let your body register the altitude before you start.

Day 1, 11:30

Start climbing

The Fujinomiya trail rises immediately and does not let up. Deliberately slow pace with regular breaks, which is the single most effective defence against altitude sickness.

Day 1, 13:00

New 7th Station

Rest stop on the way up. Water and snacks; huts on the mountain sell drinks at prices that reflect the effort of getting them there.

Day 1, 14:30

Original 7th Station (3,010m)

Above 3,000m the air is noticeably thin. Your guide watches the group for headache, nausea and breathlessness from here on.

Day 1, 17:00

Arrive at the 9th Station hut

Around 3,460m. Bunk space is a shared platform with futons laid side by side; there is no privacy and little room for luggage. Hut fee of 11,000 to 13,000 yen is paid here.

Day 1, 18:00

Dinner and rest

A simple hot meal, then early lights out. Curfew is 20:00. Most people sleep badly at this altitude, which is expected.

Day 2, 01:30

Wake-up

Dress in the dark in the layers you will climb in. Cold at the hut and colder above it.

Day 2, 02:00

Breakfast

Early food before the summit push, however little appetite the altitude has left you.

Day 2, 02:30

Climb to the summit

Head torches on for the final ascent. Slow, steep and cold, in a line of lights moving up the mountain.

Day 2, 05:15

Kengamine, 3,776m

Sunrise from the highest point in Japan, with the Pacific to the south and the Southern Alps west. Walk the Tainaiin summit crater, and watch for Kage Fuji, the mountain's shadow cast across the land below.

Day 2, 06:00

Begin the descent by the Gotemba trail

A different route down. The Osuna Hashiri is a deep ash slope where each step slides and height is lost fast; hard on the knees and very dusty.

Day 2, 09:00

Hoei Crater (2,693m)

The crater blown out of Fuji's southeastern flank in the 1707 Hoei eruption, the mountain's most recent, and its largest and newest crater.

Day 2, 11:30

Return to Fujinomiya 5th Station

Tour ends where it began. No transfer is provided, so arrange your onward travel in advance.

The price does not cover mountain hut fee jpy 11,000-13,000, mountain admission jpy 4,000, guide accommodation. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Expect uneven ground and some climbing, and mud after rain. Trainers with grip are the minimum and proper shoes are better. The pace follows the group, so tell your guide early if you want it slower rather than at the point you are struggling.

Only during the official season, roughly early July to early September — exact dates are announced each year per route. Outside it the mountain huts close, and climbing becomes a serious mountaineering proposition rather than a hike. A mandatory climbing fee and a daily cap now apply on the Yoshida route, with the other routes following. Full detail in our guide to climbing Mount Fuji.
Counterintuitively, winter — the cold, dry air gives the clearest views, while humid summer haze often hides the mountain entirely. That means the climbing season is also the worst viewing season. Where and when to look is covered in our Mount Fuji viewpoints guide.
An Odakyu pass covering the whole Hakone loop — Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi boats and buses — for less than buying the legs separately. How the loop works and which direction to travel it is in getting around Hakone.
It varies. Many traditional baths still refuse tattoos, some now allow them with cover stickers, and a private bath (kashikiri) is the reliable workaround. Bathing etiquette and how to find tattoo-friendly options are in our Hakone onsen guide.
It was listed in 2013 for its influence on art, literature and pilgrimage — not for its geology. That is why the listing includes places like Oshino Hakkai and the Sengen shrines, not just the peak itself. Background in our climbing Mount Fuji guide.
Two days lets you do the loop without rushing and still soak properly in an onsen — a single day works but means moving constantly. Our Hakone 2-day itinerary maps it out hour by hour.
Most Hakone and Mt. Fuji private tours here are priced for the whole party, not per traveller — the operator is providing a vehicle and a guide, so a group of four pays the same as a couple. The exceptions are the group summit climbs, which are genuinely per person. Each tour page states which model applies.
