Detaillierter Ablauf

Day 1, 10:00

Meet at Subashiri 5th Station

Gather at 2,000m in front of Higashifuji Sanso. Your guide checks layers, boots, water and headlamps, and explains the pacing that keeps altitude sickness at bay.

Day 1, 10:30

Into the forest

The first hours climb through the woodland belt that makes Subashiri distinctive, with shade and soft ground underfoot.

Day 1, 12:30

New 6th Station (2,420m)

A rest stop as the trees begin to thin.

Day 1, 14:00

6th Station (2,620m)

Above the tree line the route opens onto bare cinder and lava, with the plains of Shizuoka spreading out behind you.

Day 1, 15:40

7th Station (2,920m)

Altitude starts to be felt here. Short breaks, steady breathing and plenty of water.

Day 1, 18:00

8th Station hut (3,270m)

Check into the communal hut, eat, and rest early. Outside, the lights of the towns below and, on clear nights, a full sky of stars.

Day 2, 03:30

Wake and prepare

An early start in the cold. Layer up, eat something and fit your headlamp.

Day 2, 04:30

Resume climbing

Back on the trail in the dark for the final section toward the crater rim.

Day 2, 04:45

Sunrise

The sun rises over the cloud sea while you are on the trail, a quieter place to see it than the summit.

Day 2, 07:30

Summit at 3,720m and crater walk

Reach the top, then walk the rim past the Tainaiin. Weather permitting, look across to the Hoei Crater and for the Kage Fuji shadow.

Day 2, 08:30

Sunabashiri descent

Begin the descent down the soft volcanic sand slope, a fast and unusual way off the mountain. Gaiters keep the grit out of your boots.

Day 2, 14:00

Finish at the 5th Station

Arrive back at 2,000m and part with your guide.

The price does not cover accommodation jpy 8,000-12,000, mountain entrance fee jpy 4,000 per person, optional insurance jpy 500 per person, guide accommodation jpy 8,000-12,000, shuttle bus jpy 2,000-2,500 per person. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Expect uneven ground and some climbing, and mud after rain. Trainers with grip are the minimum and proper shoes are better. The pace follows the group, so tell your guide early if you want it slower rather than at the point you are struggling.
Fuji Sunrise (IRORI). We book with them directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can confirm your place with the operator before taking it as final.
We confirm your booking with the operator before we treat it as final, and we need at least one day's notice outside India. Once it is confirmed you get the meeting point, the time and a contact number for the day. If the operator cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Only during the official season, roughly early July to early September — exact dates are announced each year per route. Outside it the mountain huts close, and climbing becomes a serious mountaineering proposition rather than a hike. A mandatory climbing fee and a daily cap now apply on the Yoshida route, with the other routes following. Full detail in our guide to climbing Mount Fuji.
Counterintuitively, winter — the cold, dry air gives the clearest views, while humid summer haze often hides the mountain entirely. That means the climbing season is also the worst viewing season. Where and when to look is covered in our Mount Fuji viewpoints guide.
An Odakyu pass covering the whole Hakone loop — Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi boats and buses — for less than buying the legs separately. How the loop works and which direction to travel it is in getting around Hakone.
It varies. Many traditional baths still refuse tattoos, some now allow them with cover stickers, and a private bath (kashikiri) is the reliable workaround. Bathing etiquette and how to find tattoo-friendly options are in our Hakone onsen guide.
It was listed in 2013 for its influence on art, literature and pilgrimage — not for its geology. That is why the listing includes places like Oshino Hakkai and the Sengen shrines, not just the peak itself. Background in our climbing Mount Fuji guide.
Two days lets you do the loop without rushing and still soak properly in an onsen — a single day works but means moving constantly. Our Hakone 2-day itinerary maps it out hour by hour.
Most Hakone and Mt. Fuji private tours here are priced for the whole party, not per traveller — the operator is providing a vehicle and a guide, so a group of four pays the same as a couple. The exceptions are the group summit climbs, which are genuinely per person. Each tour page states which model applies.
