Port City ist der neueste Teil Colombos, ein dem Meer entlang Galle Face im letzten Jahrzehnt abgewonnenes Landstueck, und sein geschuetztes Wasser hat sich zum einfachsten Ort der Stadt entwickelt, um aufs Paddel zu kommen. Diese Session gibt Ihnen eine Stunde im Kanu mit einem Instruktor an der Hand.

Ein Kanu wird mit einem einzelnen Blatt gepaddelt statt dem Doppelblatt eines Kajaks, was bedeutet, dass die Technik etwas anders ist und ein paar Minuten braucht, um sich einzustellen. Der Instruktor behandelt zunaechst die Grundlagen an Land: wie man sitzt, wie man das Paddel haelt, den Vorwaertsschlag und den Schwung, der Sie dreht, und was zu tun ist im unwahrscheinlichen Fall, dass Sie im Wasser landen. Danach gehoert Ihnen die Stunde zum Paddeln.

Das Wasser hier ist vor dem offenen Meer geschuetzt, die Bedingungen sind also ruhig und vorhersehbar, anders als der Strand vor Galle Face. Das macht es zu einem vernuenftigen Ort, um Kanufahren zum ersten Mal zu versuchen, und einem unkomplizierten Ort, um aeltere Kinder mitzubringen. Schwimmwesten werden durchgehend getragen und Personal bleibt auf dem Wasser.

Die Umgebung ist ungewoehnlich: Sie paddeln mit der Skyline Colombos auf der einen Seite und Neubauten auf der anderen, in einem Teil der Stadt, der vor einem Jahrzehnt noch nicht existierte. Der spaete Nachmittag ist der angenehme Zeitpunkt, wenn die Hitze nachgelassen hat und das Licht auf den Tuermen eine Kamera wert ist.

Es ist eine kurze, in sich geschlossene Aktivitaet statt einer Stadtbesichtigung, und sie passt gut zu einem anschliessenden Spaziergang entlang Galle Face Green fuer die abendlichen Essenswagen.
