Die Kuestenstrasse suedlich von Colombo fuehrt durch eine Reihe von Staedten, die lange vor der Ankunft des Tourismus von Zimt, Kokosfaser und Fischerei lebten, und dieser Tag folgt ihr bis Galle. Die Schnellstrasse bringt Sie schnell aus der Stadt heraus, und der Tag wird in kurzen Etappen zwischen den Stopps verbracht statt in einer langen durchgehenden Fahrt.
Bentota ist der erste Stopp, eine Flussmuendung, wo der Bentota Ganga auf das Meer trifft. Von dort fuehrt die Route weiter nach Kosgoda, wo eine Meeresschildkroeten-Aufzuchtstation Eier vom Strand sammelt, sie ausbruetet und die Jungtiere freilaesst. Fuenf der sieben Meeresschildkroetenarten der Welt nisten an diesem Kuestenabschnitt, und das Personal der Aufzuchtstation erklaert den Druck, dem sie durch Wilderei, Netze und Kuestenentwicklung ausgesetzt sind.
Die Bootssafari auf der Madu Ganga ist der laengste Stopp des Tages. Der Fluss oeffnet sich zu einer flachen Lagune, uebersaet mit kleinen Inseln, und das Boot fahrt durch Mangrovenkanaele, wo sich die Wurzeln oben schliessen. Sie kommen an Zimtinseln vorbei, wo die Rinde noch von Hand geschaelt wird, kleinen Tempeln auf eigenen Inselchen, Fischfarmen und, wenn das Licht stimmt, Warane und Eisvoegel entlang der Ufer. Etwa neunzig Minuten bis zwei Stunden auf dem Wasser.
Das Mittagessen findet an der Kueste in Hikkaduwa statt, dann geht es nach Galle. Die Festung wurde von den Portugiesen erbaut und im 17. Jahrhundert von den Hollaendern wiederaufgebaut, und die Wallanlagen umschliessen noch immer eine aktive Stadt mit Haeusern aus der hollaendischen Zeit, Kirchen, einer Moschee und dem Leuchtturm an der Seemauer. Es ist eine UNESCO-Staette und eignet sich gut zum Durchwandern: die Strassen im Inneren sind klein genug, dass eine Stunde zu Fuss die meisten davon abdeckt.
Die Rueckfahrt nach Colombo dauert ein paar Stunden. Insgesamt ist das ein voller Tag, aber ein sanfterer als die Ausfluege ins Landesinnere, mit dem meisten Zeit ausserhalb des Fahrzeugs verbracht.

We had a good taste of the South on this one day trip. We really enjoyed visiting Bentota beach, Madu river safari and walking around Galle. Range was accommodating, providing good information, checked to ensure we were happy and made photo stops along the way. It was a good way of filling in the day before we flew out late that night.

We had a very enjoyable time on our tour last week. Our driver Dhanesh picked us up promptly and drove us around in his comfortable car. He stuck to the itinerary outlined on the tour description but also mentioned that if there was anything of interest we wanted to do that wasn't on the list, he would be happy to make that happen for us.
