Die Stadt wurde von den Briten als Fluchtort fuer die heisse Saison gebaut und sieht noch immer so aus: eine Pferderennbahn, ein Golfplatz, Bungalows im Tudor-Stil und ein Postamt, das in der englischen Landschaft nicht fehl am Platz waere. Ihr Stopp im Grand Hotel fuer High Tea lehnt sich an diese Geschichte an, das Gebaeude war eine Gouverneursresidenz, bevor es ein Hotel wurde.

Davor besuchen Sie eine aktive Teefabrik. Tee erreichte Ceylon, nachdem die Kaffeekrankheit in den 1870er-Jahren die frueheren Plantagen zerstoert hatte, und das Bergland wurde fast vollstaendig damit umgepflanzt. Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead.
