Wilpattu ist der groesste Nationalpark Sri Lankas und, fuer die meisten Besucher, der am wenigsten bekannte. Sein Name bedeutet Land der Seen, und der Park ist um Villus aufgebaut, natuerliche, sandumgraenzte Regenbecken, die Tiere aus dem trockenen Wald zum Trinken locken. Statt einen Rundweg durch offenes Grasland zu fahren, bewegen Sie sich zwischen Wasserstellen und warten.
Der Park ist am bekanntesten fuer seine Leoparden, und Wilpattu hat eine gesunde Population, aber niemand Ehrlicher wird Ihnen eine Sichtung versprechen. Lippenbaeren-Sichtungen erreichen ihren Hoehepunkt im Juni und Juli, wenn die Palu-Frucht reift. Darueber hinaus erwarten Sie Axishirsche, Sambarhirsche, Wildschweine, Bueffel, Krokodile an den Villu-Raendern und eine lange Vogelliste, von Nimmersatt-Stoerchen bis Schlangenadlern.
Sie reisen in einem offenen 4x4 mit einem Fahrer-Spurenleser, der diese Pfade taeglich per Funk und frischen Pfotenabdruecken im Sand liest. Etwa vier Stunden werden im Park verbracht. Nehmen Sie die Morgenfahrt, die im ersten Licht beginnt, wenn die Tieraktivitaet am hoechsten ist, oder die Nachmittagsfahrt, die durch die goldenen Stunden bis zur Schliessung laeuft.
Seien Sie sich ueber die Reise im Klaren, wenn Sie dies ab Colombo buchen. Wilpattu liegt grob 180 Kilometer nordlich der Stadt, und die Strasse fuehrt durch Puttalam statt den ganzen Weg ueber eine Autobahn. Mit einer Abfahrt vor Tagesanbruch und einer Rueckkehr nach der Fahrt wird dies zu einem langen Tag von zehn bis zwoelf Stunden, der grosste Teil davon in einem Fahrzeug. Reisende, die bereits in Anuradhapura, Negombo oder nahe dem Parkeingang wohnen, haben eine weit einfachere Version derselben Erfahrung, und Abholung von diesen Punkten ist verfuegbar.
Bringen Sie einen Hut, eine Sonnenbrille und etwas, um die Stoesse abzufedern, die internen Pfade sind rauer Sand und Fels. Neutrale Kleidung hilft, ebenso ein Zoomobjektiv. Fahrten laufen das ganze Jahr, obwohl der Park waehrend starker Monsunregen von Oktober bis Dezember kurz schliessen kann.

Today I had a wonderful experience at Will Pau National Park. The guide and his driver were truly attentive to my every need and answered all my questions. We toured the entire morning in the Jeep and were lucky enough to see several animals, including a leopard and an elephant. I highly recommend this experience.
Absolutely top-notch and highly recommended We spontaneously decided to do this for our Sri Lanka road trip, because Wilpattu is less known to tourists than other national parks. Our driver was on time at the pick-up spot and dropped us off on time too The tour was really awesome, and we were lucky enough to see a leopard too. The guide was friendly and gave us a lot of great info and background knowledge about the animals and the park. All in all, absolutely top-notch 😊

An incredible experience. Our guide, Nadhun, is a very nice person and very respectful, and even though he didn't know much English, he showed us everything we saw during the safari. He is also a great expert on the park, he took us through many areas, cutting corners where he thought best. We were very lucky because in addition to seeing a great variety of fauna, we were able to see four leopards. It was incredible, highly recommended, an unforgettable experience. The only thing I can say against it is that everything they offer you for food is very spicy, including breakfast, but that is secondary. A unique experience!
What a wonderful experience!! Our driver was great, reliable and the car was very comfortable for the 3.5hr journey each way. The system at the park was very smooth, as soon as we arrived our guide and driver were ready to welcome us and set off on safari. We were so lucky to see ALL the animals within the afternoon and our guide was very knowledgeable, sharing information throughout the trip. Our 7 year old was awestruck, a trip we will all remember and highly recommend.
Incredible! We saw the leopard!! I recommend doing it in the morning. When we returned around 10am it was full of wasps and if you are afraid of them it is a bad time.
Responsive guides, beautiful environment. No elephants for us, but the guide seemed to say it was better to come in the morning. Very satisfied nonetheless.
We had a missunderstanding when booking and the people were really nice amd helped us all the way through, the safari guy went through all kinds of roads to find all kind of animals and was great at spotting animals
It was really great. We were picked up at the pickup point as agreed and had the jeep to ourselves, which was of course a stroke of luck for us. We were even allowed to take our large luggage with us. Our driver wasn't fluent in English, but he was really friendly and had very trained eyes. He saw animals that we would never have seen. We saw everything from elephants, leopards, buffalo, monkeys, deer, various types of birds, rabbits and crocodiles. And all of that in "only" 5 hours... So our day was absolutely positive. I can only recommend it for the price.
