Wilpattu ist der groesste Nationalpark Sri Lankas und der ruhigste der Leopardenparks. Wo sich in Yala Dutzende Jeeps um eine einzige Sichtung versammeln koennen, deckt Wilpattu weit mehr Gelaende mit deutlich weniger Fahrzeugen ab, ein Leopard hier gehoert also meist Ihnen allein. Der Kompromiss ist ehrlich: dichter Buschwald versteckt Tiere gut, und Sie fahren moeglicherweise eine Stunde zwischen Sichtungen.
Der Park verdankt seinen Namen und Charakter den Villus, natuerlichen, sandumrandeten Regenwasserseen, die im Wald verstreut liegen. Tiere kommen zum Trinken an die Villus, die Safariroute arbeitet sich also von einem zum naechsten vor. Lippenbaeren sind hier eine echte Moeglichkeit, besonders im Juni und Juli, wenn die Palu-Frucht reift und sie dafuer klettern. Leoparden, Axishirsche, Sambarhirsche, Wasserbueffel, Sumpfkrokodile, Wildschweine und eine lange Liste ansaessiger und wandernder Voegel runden den Rest ab.
Dies ist eine private Tour, Jeep und Spurenleser gehoeren also Ihnen. Das bedeutet mehr, als es klingt. Es heisst, dass Sie an einem Villu sitzen und warten koennen statt weitergeschickt zu werden, und dass der Fahrer Alarmrufen folgen kann statt einer festen Route.
Seien Sie klar ueber den Tag im Bilde. Wilpattu liegt etwa 180 Kilometer nordlich von Colombo, und die Fahrt dauert etwa dreieinhalb Stunden in jede Richtung, die Abholung erfolgt also vor der Daemmerung, und Sie werden spaet zuruck sein. Zaehlt man Fahrt, Parkrundfahrt und Mittagessen zusammen, ist das ein zwoelf- bis vierzehnstuendiger Tag. Wenn Sie es nicht an einem Stueck machen moechten, macht eine Uebernachtung nahe dem Parkeingang es zu einer viel besseren Reise.
Eintrittsgebuehren und Mittagessen sind bereits abgedeckt, was das uebliche Gewuehl um Bargeld am Parkschalter entfernt.
Die trockeneren Monate von etwa Februar bis Oktober bieten die beste Tierbeobachtung, da sich die Tiere am Wasser konzentrieren. Der Park schliesst gelegentlich Abschnitte nach starkem Regen.

Perfect day, my guide Nelum was very nice, he was on time and a good driver, he found a leopard up in the trees so I got some realy good pictures.
We were able to see a lot of animals, even a leopard from a distance, so we were very lucky and our driver responded to our wishes, it was a very successful trip. And we also drove away from the mass tourism, except for the leopard and bear, then more and more came.
Our driver Raveen was very polite & knowledgeable. The drive was very comfortable to the national park. Our safari jeep driver did his best to show us as many animals as possible and was quick to spot hidden birds & animals. Then we stopped for a very nice lunch at Wilpattu Coco Hut Village Foods - the owner was very friendly & the food was delicious & plentiful.
Great experience, organization was perfect. we saw 3 leopards , elephants , crocodiles and many other animals. highly recommended !
Had a really great day In the morning at 4:30 a.m., the driver (Emila) picked us up and we went to Wilpattu National Park. At the park, we were paired with another driver for the safari. Emila also came with us. We can't say anything other than that we had a really good safari. The safari driver and Emila were both really good. There was room for information, but he also made sure we saw as many animals as possible. It's really nice that he doesn't just stick to the main path, but also takes the side roads. Highly recommended!
The driver was very friendly and drove very smoothly. The Jeep driver was also very nice; in addition, a national park guide was present, who could tell us a lot about the animals in the park. The included lunch at a buffet restaurant was also okay. We didn’t see many animals because there had been a storm the night before, and many areas of the park were impassable. Overall, it was a great tour; however, for the price, we probably wouldn’t book it again—although it was certainly fair for the service provided!
