Von Nuwara Eliya nach Ella sind es nur etwa zwei Stunden pro Strecke, was dies zu einem der wenigen Tagesausfluege Sri Lankas macht, bei denen die Fahrt nicht den Tag dominiert.

Die Strasse faellt neunhundert Meter zwischen den beiden Staedten, und der Wechsel ist leicht zu fuehlen: Nuwara Eliya auf 1.900 Metern ist kalt, formell und britisch gebaut, und Ella auf 1.000 ist warm, locker und voller Wanderer. Die Plantagen dazwischen sind der am hoechsten angebaute Tee des Landes.

Vor Ort deckt der Tag ab, wofuer Ella bekannt ist. Eine aktive Teefabrik fuehrt das Blatt vom Welktrog zur Sortiertabelle in etwa fuenfundvierzig Minuten. Little Adam’s Peak ist 45 Minuten einen gestuften Pfad hinauf fuer die Aussicht durch die Ella Gap. Die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke, 91 Meter Stein, errichtet ohne Stahl waehrend des Ersten Weltkriegs, liegt einen zwanzigminuetigen Spaziergang unterhalb der Stadt. Die Ravana-Wasserfaelle liegen an der Strasse nach Sueden.

Wenn Ella sowieso Ihr naechster Stopp ist, kostet die einfache Transferversion dieser Route weniger und erspart Ihnen vier Stunden im Auto, aber als Tagesausflug ab einer Basis in Nuwara Eliya funktioniert dies.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern in den Bergen des Sueden, erreichbar mit dem Zug aus Kandy, den die meisten fuer die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens halten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle nur wenige Kilometer entfernt: die Neun-Bogen-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, das mehrmals taeglich von einem Zug ueberquert wird; der Little Adam’s Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Teefelder zu einem Kamm; Ella Rock, ein anspruchsvollerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle an der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Die Morgen sind klar, und an Nachmittagen der feuchten Monate zieht Wolken in den Pass, deshalb finden Wanderungen frueh statt. Tuk-Tuks sind das Verkehrsmittel, und jede Pension kann eines besorgen.

Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
