Horton Plains funktioniert nur in der Daemmerung, und diese einzige Tatsache praegt diesen gesamten Tag.

World's End blickt nach Sueden. Warme Luft steigt im Laufe des Vormittags von der Ebene auf, und bis neun oder zehn Uhr steckt die Klippe in einer Wolke, ohne dass etwas sichtbar ist. Das Tor oeffnet um sechs Uhr, was bedeutet, Nuwara Eliya um fuenf Uhr zu verlassen, und es gibt keine flexible Version davon.

Das Plateau liegt auf etwa 2.300 Metern und ist anders als jeder andere Ort in Sri Lanka, montanes Grasland und Wolkenwald, windgepeitscht und kalt, mit verkuemmerten, moosbehangenen Baeumen. Die Schleife ist neun Kilometer lang und dauert drei bis vier Stunden, gegen den Uhrzeigersinn gegangen, damit World's End vor der Wolke kommt und die Baker-Wasserfaelle auf dem Rueckweg.

Mit der Wanderung bis spaetem Vormittag beendet, fuellt sich der Rest des Tages mit Dingen, die keinen fruehen Start benoetigen: eine aktive Teefabrik, die das Blatt vom Welktrog zum Sortiertisch verfolgt, und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle auf der Strasse hinunter nach Ella.

Zwoelf Stunden insgesamt, was lang klingt und sich nicht so anfuehlt, weil der anstrengende Teil bis elf Uhr vorbei ist.

Ella ist ein Dorf auf 1.040 Metern im suedlichen Hochland, erreicht durch den Zug von Kandy, den die meisten Menschen als die schoenste Bahnfahrt Asiens bewerten, und seine Sehenswuerdigkeiten liegen alle innerhalb wenigen Kilometern: die Nine-Arch-Bruecke, ein Backsteinviadukt von 1921 in einer Teeschlucht, die ein Zug mehrmals am Tag ueberquert; Little Adam's Peak, ein 40-minuetiger Spaziergang durch Tee zu einem Grat; Ella Rock, ein schwierigerer dreistuendiger Aufstieg; und die Ravana-Wasserfaelle auf der Strasse nach Wellawaya. Morgen sind klar und Nachmittage in den feuchten Monaten bringen Wolken in die Luecke, daher werden die Wanderungen frueh gemacht. Tuk-Tuks sind das Transportmittel, und jedes Gaestehaus kann eines finden.
