Der Pekoe Trail fuehrt ueber 300 Kilometer durch Sri Lankas Teeland auf Wegen, die es bereits gab, und Etappe 11 ist jene, die erfahrene Wanderer besonders hervorheben.

Sie beginnt nahe der Grenze von Horton Plains auf etwa 2.000 Metern und faellt die Teufelstreppe hinab, einen von den Briten angelegten Pfad, um Tee aus den entlegensten Plantagen des Landes abzutransportieren, in Serpentinen einen Steilhang hinab, wobei sich bei jeder Kurve das Tal darunter oeffnet. Es ist dem Namen nach ein Jeep-Pfad und in der Praxis eine Wanderroute, und es ist praktisch niemand dort.

Udaweriya am Fuss ist der eigentliche Punkt. Es war eine der hoechsten und abgelegensten Teeplantagen Ceylons, und die Fabrik dort steht seit Jahrzehnten verlassen, ein grosses viktorianisches Industriegebaeude, leer in einem Tal, die Maschinen noch im Inneren. Die Unterkuenfte der Plantage in der Naehe sind noch bewohnt.

Das Wandern ist wirklich anspruchsvoll: lang, meist bergab auf unebenem Grund, und der Abstieg belastet die Knie staerker, als ein Aufstieg die Lunge belasten wuerde. Etwa sechs Stunden zu Fuss.

Das ist kein malerischer Spaziergang und sollte auch nicht so gebucht werden. Es ist die Etappe fuer Leute, die nach Sri Lanka gekommen sind, um zu wandern.

Sri Lankas Tage im Freien liegen im Bergland und an den Fluessen. Horton Plains, oberhalb von Nuwara Eliya, ist eine 9-Kilometer-Schleife auf einem Plateau auf 2.100 Metern zu World's End, einer 880 Meter hohen Klippe, und den Baker's Falls, begangen ab 6:30 Uhr, bevor die Wolken die Sicht gegen 10:00 Uhr fuellen. Das Knuckles-Gebirge bietet mehrtaegiges Trekking durch Nebelwald und Doerfer. Kitulgala, am Kelani-Fluss, wo Die Bruecke am Kwai gedreht wurde, ist die Raftingbasis mit Stromschnellen der Klasse II bis III auf etwa fuenf Kilometern, am besten von Mai bis Dezember, wenn der Fluss voll ist. Blutegel gehoeren zu den feuchten Waeldern; Salz oder lange Socken helfen dagegen.
