Halong die Stadt statt Halong die Bucht, die fast jeder Besucher ganz auslässt.

Nahezu alle, die hierherkommen, gehen an Bord eines Bootes und fahren wieder. Die Stadt hinter dem Pier ist eine arbeitende Provinzhauptstadt von einigen hunderttausend Menschen, auf Kohlegeld gebaut, und sie hat, was eine Kohle- und Seestadt hat, und nicht, was ein Ferienort hat.

Das Museum von Quang Ninh ist der Grund für diese Tour. Es ist ein schwarzer Glaskasten an der Uferpromenade, entworfen vom spanischen Architekten Salvador Perez Arroyo, und es ist wirklich eines der besseren Museen Vietnams: das Gebäude spiegelt die Bucht in seiner Fassade, und innen reicht es von der Meeresgeologie der Region bis zur Geschichte des Kohlebergbaus, der die Stadt gebaut hat, samt einem nachgebauten Grubenschacht.

Die Long-Tien-Pagode liegt am Fuß des Bai-Tho-Bergs und ist die größte der Stadt, gebaut im Jahrzehnt ab 1940 im Stil der älteren Tempel von Hanoi.

Der Fischmarkt ist, wo die Stadt tatsächlich isst. Halongs Fang kommt frisch herein, und der Markt ist der einheimische Preis und nicht der Preis am Pier.
