Thank you, Mai, for an experience off the beaten path. We truly appreciated the fast and straightforward communication from start to finish. The workshop was an absolute highlight of our trip, and now we have our favourite souvenirs to take home. The blacksmith family was incredibly friendly and supported us with the heavier tasks whenever needed. This experience was the most memorable part of my visit to Hanoi. Not only did I learn about the history of the blacksmith village, but, under the careful tutelage of an expert blacksmith, I made a traditional Vietnamese cooking knife that I use at home regularly. Mai was always on hand to help translate and clarify. Mai clearly put a tremendous amount of work into establishing relationships with local artisans and to researching and understanding their history and skills. To say you are still buzzing the day after is testament to how amazing that was. Firstly, Mai, the host, engaging, personable, just amazing. The family that own the blacksmiths and showcase their craft were brilliant too, guiding you through the process of how a knife is made using traditional methods. I’ve come away with a handcrafted, personalised knife, something where I marked the raw steel, cut out the shape, whittled the handle, sanded, tempered, sharpening, to where I had the responsibility of knocking the handle in to place. This was an amazing activity for my family (with kids of 16, 14, and 11). Mai was a great host and everything about the activity was top notch. Very informative, enjoyable, and we leave with souvenirs to last a lifetime! This was our favorite activity we did while in Hanoi.

Great experience, and a real useful handcrafted knife as a souvenir. Lovely experience. I got to learn more about blacksmithing, the true local culture and I got an amazing handcrafted cooking knife that I made together with the smith Ha as a reminder of my time here. The organizer Mai was a very helpful and trustworthy guide. She assisted me from start to finish and was a great host who speaks fluent English.
