Angkor Wat fue construido en la primera mitad del siglo 12 por Suryavarman II como templo hindu dedicado a Vishnu, mas tarde convertido al uso budista, y es el monumento religioso mas grande del mundo con aproximadamente 162 hectareas dentro de su foso. A diferencia de casi todos los demas templos jemeres, mira hacia el oeste. La galeria exterior porta unos 600 metros de bajorrelieve, incluido el Batido del Oceano de Leche, y las torres centrales representan el monte Meru.
