Itinerario detallado

9:00 - 11:00 AM

Door-to-door pickup

Your guide meets you at your Fujikawaguchiko accommodation and loads all luggage into the private vehicle. Start time is flexible within this window and is usually set around your hotel's checkout and your Hakone check-in.

+30 min

Oshino Hakkai

A short walk between the eight named ponds. The water here fell as snow on Fuji decades ago and has been filtering down through porous basalt ever since, which is why it emerges this clear and this cold. Thatched houses, a water wheel and food stalls surround the site.

+1 hr 15

Ninooka Shrine

A small forest sanctuary reached on foot through cedars, with almost no tour traffic. Your guide explains the Shinto conventions of approach, purification and offering, which are easier to absorb somewhere this quiet than at a major shrine.

+2 hr

Lunch, two options

Option A is Fukunoya, where soba is cut by hand on the premises. Option B is Toraya Kobo, a confectionery workshop serving seasonal wagashi and matcha in a bamboo garden. Tell your guide which you prefer. Budget JPY 2,000-3,000 per person; not included.

+3 hr

The pass into the caldera

The road climbs out of the Fuji basin and crosses the ridge into Hakone. Hakone is a caldera formed by the collapse of an older volcano, and its sulphur vents at Owakudani are still active. The change in landscape over the pass is worth watching for.

+3 hr 30

Ashinoko Observation Park

A full-circle viewpoint above Lake Ashi. The lake fills the caldera floor; the sightseeing boats styled as pirate ships are usually visible crossing it below. On a clear day Fuji stands behind the far rim.

+4 hr

Hotel or ryokan drop-off

Delivered directly to your Hakone accommodation with your luggage, in time for check-in.

Religious sites expect shoulders and knees covered, and shoes come off before entering many of them. A light scarf is worth carrying. Where a site enforces this at the gate, arriving dressed correctly saves the whole group time.

Only during the official season, roughly early July to early September — exact dates are announced each year per route. Outside it the mountain huts close, and climbing becomes a serious mountaineering proposition rather than a hike. A mandatory climbing fee and a daily cap now apply on the Yoshida route, with the other routes following. Full detail in our guide to climbing Mount Fuji.
Counterintuitively, winter — the cold, dry air gives the clearest views, while humid summer haze often hides the mountain entirely. That means the climbing season is also the worst viewing season. Where and when to look is covered in our Mount Fuji viewpoints guide.
An Odakyu pass covering the whole Hakone loop — Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi boats and buses — for less than buying the legs separately. How the loop works and which direction to travel it is in getting around Hakone.
It varies. Many traditional baths still refuse tattoos, some now allow them with cover stickers, and a private bath (kashikiri) is the reliable workaround. Bathing etiquette and how to find tattoo-friendly options are in our Hakone onsen guide.
It was listed in 2013 for its influence on art, literature and pilgrimage — not for its geology. That is why the listing includes places like Oshino Hakkai and the Sengen shrines, not just the peak itself. Background in our climbing Mount Fuji guide.
Two days lets you do the loop without rushing and still soak properly in an onsen — a single day works but means moving constantly. Our Hakone 2-day itinerary maps it out hour by hour.
Most Hakone and Mt. Fuji private tours here are priced for the whole party, not per traveller — the operator is providing a vehicle and a guide, so a group of four pays the same as a couple. The exceptions are the group summit climbs, which are genuinely per person. Each tour page states which model applies.
