Colombo no concentra sus lugares de interes en un solo barrio recorrible a pie, por eso esta media jornada se hace en coche. Cinco horas son suficientes para enlazar los monumentos, el templo, el parque y el distrito de mercado sin pasar todo el tiempo en el trafico.

La Plaza de la Independencia es la primera parada y la mas directamente politica. El pabellon se construyo para conmemorar el traspaso del dominio britanico en febrero de 1948, modelado segun el salon de audiencias de los ultimos reyes de Kandy, y esta rodeado de leones de piedra y la estatua del primer primer ministro. Cerca, el Salon de Conferencias Internacional Conmemorativo Bandaranaike es una pieza de diplomacia de los años 1970 en hormigon, donada por China y todavia el principal recinto estatal de la ciudad.

El parque Viharamahadevi le da la mitad verde del centro de Colombo, trazado por los britanicos como Victoria Park y renombrado en honor a una reina de las cronicas de Anuradhapura. La parada mas larga es el Templo Gangaramaya, donde unos cincuenta minutos no son excesivos: el complejo mezcla arquitectura de Sri Lanka, tailandesa, india y china en un solo recinto y sus salas de museo estan llenas de objetos donados, desde Budas de jade hasta un Rolls-Royce antiguo.

Pettah cierra el turismo. El tour pasa por las calles de mercado en lugar de detenerse mucho tiempo, lo cual basta para ver como funciona el distrito, con cada calle dedicada a un solo oficio detras del ladrillo a rayas rojas y blancas de la mezquita Jami Ul-Alfar.

El almuerzo es la razon por la que mucha gente reserva esto. La cocina de Jaffna viene del norte tamil y es distinta de la cocina del sur: mas india en su uso de las especias, mas cargada de curries de cangrejo y marisco, y conocida por el caldo de marisco odiyal kool. Servida en una hoja de platano y comida con la mano derecha, es una comida completa en lugar de una degustacion, y merece la pena llegar con hambre.
