El Thermopylae Sierra encallo frente a Colombo y nunca volvio a flotar. Parte del casco todavia se eleva por encima del agua, lo que lo convierte en uno de los muy pocos pecios de Sri Lanka al que se puede acercar directamente en superficie en lugar de bucear hasta el. Este viaje es un paseo guiado en moto de agua de ida y vuelta por la costa de Mount Lavinia.

Comienza en tierra con una charla informativa: acelerador y direccion, el cordon de apagado en la muñeca, como gira la maquina cuando suelta el acelerador, y las reglas para mantenerse en formacion detras del guia. No se necesita licencia ni experiencia previa, pero debe seguir al piloto guia, porque el recorrido cruza aguas usadas por los botes pesqueros que salen de Colombo.

El trayecto hasta el pecio dura aproximadamente de veinticinco a treinta minutos en cada direccion segun el mar. Se acerca lo bastante para ver el forro, el oxido y el oleaje trabajando la estructura expuesta, con tiempo para apagar los motores y tomar fotografias antes de volver. Las aves marinas lo usan como percha, y en dias claros puede ver cuanto del casco esta bajo la superficie.

Dos horas cubren todo: la charla informativa, el equipamiento, el trayecto de ida, el tiempo en el pecio, el regreso y el secado. El tiempo real en la maquina es considerablemente menor, y conviene ir con esa expectativa.

El estado del mar lo determina todo aqui. Los meses mas secos, de noviembre a abril aproximadamente, ofrecen el agua mas calmada y las mejores posibilidades de cumplir el horario. Durante el monzon del suroeste, de mayo a septiembre aproximadamente, el oleaje en esta costa obliga con frecuencia a posponer los viajes, y un operador responsable cancelara antes que sacar una moto de agua a un mar peligroso.

Conduce con un chaleco salvavidas puesto y el guia permanece siempre a la vista. Espere mojarse por completo.
