La carretera costera al sur de Colombo atraviesa una serie de ciudades que vivian de la canela, la fibra de coco y la pesca mucho antes de que llegara el turismo, y este dia la sigue hasta Galle. La autopista le aleja rapidamente de la ciudad, y el dia se pasa en trayectos cortos entre paradas en lugar de un largo viaje unico.
Bentota es la primera parada, una desembocadura donde el Bentota Ganga se encuentra con el mar. Desde alli la ruta continua hacia Kosgoda, donde una ecloseria de tortugas marinas recoge huevos de la playa, los incuba y libera a las crias. Cinco de las siete especies de tortugas marinas del mundo nidifican en este tramo de costa, y el personal de la ecloseria explica las presiones que sufren por la caza furtiva, las redes y el desarrollo costero.
El safari en bote por el Madu Ganga es la parada mas larga del dia. El rio se abre en una laguna poco profunda salpicada de pequeñas islas, y el bote navega por tuneles de manglar donde las raices se cierran arriba. Pasara junto a islas de canela donde la corteza todavia se pela a mano, pequeños templos en sus propios islotes, granjas de peces y, si la luz lo permite, varanos y martines pescadores junto a las orillas. Entre noventa minutos y dos horas en el agua aproximadamente.
El almuerzo se toma en la costa en Hikkaduwa, luego es el turno de Galle. El fuerte fue construido por los portugueses y reconstruido por los holandeses en el siglo 17, y las murallas todavia encierran una ciudad activa de casas de la epoca holandesa, iglesias, una mezquita y el faro en el muro frente al mar. Es un sitio de la UNESCO y se recorre bien a pie: las calles interiores son lo bastante pequeñas para que una hora caminando cubra la mayoria de ellas.
El trayecto de vuelta a Colombo dura un par de horas. En conjunto, es un dia completo, pero mas suave que las excursiones hacia el interior, con la mayor parte del tiempo fuera del vehiculo.

We had a good taste of the South on this one day trip. We really enjoyed visiting Bentota beach, Madu river safari and walking around Galle. Range was accommodating, providing good information, checked to ensure we were happy and made photo stops along the way. It was a good way of filling in the day before we flew out late that night.
Ranga was my guide today. He was nice and showed me everything he could. I can recommend him.

The itinerary makes for quite a fulfilling day if you are short on time and want to tick Galle and some sights along the way. Especially for his flexibility and good thinking in introducing us to some extra free entry stops along the way to Galle, such as going to a gemstone mine and a Tsunami photo museum, whilst still remaining efficient with the timing for a jam-packed day. We had a very enjoyable time on our tour last week. Our driver Dhanesh picked us up promptly and drove us around in his comfortable car. He stuck to the itinerary outlined on the tour description but also mentioned that if there was anything of interest we wanted to do that wasn't on the list, he would be happy to make that happen for us.
