Nuwara Eliya esta a unos 1.900 metros, y la subida para llegar es gran parte de lo que esta pagando. La carretera deja la llanura costera, sube por Kadugannawa o Hatton segun la ruta, y el paisaje cambia en el camino, el arroz da paso al caucho, el caucho al te, y el aire se enfria hasta que necesita una chaqueta en un pais donde nadie empaca una. Las cascadas aparecen junto a la carretera durante gran parte de la ultima hora.

La ciudad fue construida por los britanicos como refugio de temporada calida y todavia lo parece: un hipodromo, un campo de golf, bungalows de estilo Tudor y una oficina de correos que no estaria fuera de lugar en el campo ingles. Su parada en el Grand Hotel para el te de la tarde se apoya en esa historia, el edificio fue residencia de un gobernador antes de convertirse en hotel.

Antes de eso visita una fabrica de te en funcionamiento. El te llego a Ceilan despues de que la plaga del cafe destruyera las plantaciones anteriores en los años 1870, y las montañas se replantaron casi por completo con el. Dentro sigue la hoja desde las artesas de marchitado a traves del enrollado, la oxidacion, el secado y la clasificacion, y prueba lo que sale al final.

El lago Gregory llena el valle debajo de la ciudad. Embalsado bajo el gobernador Gregory en los años 1870, es ahora donde Nuwara Eliya pasa sus fines de semana, botes en el agua, caballos a lo largo de la orilla, puestos de comida alrededor. Tiene alli aproximadamente una hora.

Este es un dia de quince horas y no hay forma de acortarlo. Aproximadamente diez de esas horas se pasan en el coche, divididas entre la subida y el descenso de vuelta a la costa en la oscuridad. El paisaje merece la pena y el conductor se detiene donde tiene sentido, pero deberia reservar esto sabiendo que saldra en la madrugada y regresara tarde. Si puede permitirse una noche en las montañas en su lugar, ese es el mejor viaje, este es para viajeros que no pueden.

No — they close on poya days, the monthly full moon and a public holiday in Sri Lanka. If your free day is a poya, take an estate walk with a plucker instead. Plucking happens in the morning; by afternoon the slopes are empty.

At a factory, not a tourist shop. Factory shops carry the higher grades that never reach a visitor shelf; the boxed tea on the main streets is usually fannings at visitor prices.
Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead.
