Wilpattu es el parque nacional mas grande de Sri Lanka y, para la mayoria de los visitantes, el menos conocido. Su nombre significa tierra de lagos, y el parque esta construido alrededor de villus, cuencas pluviales naturales bordeadas de arena que atraen a los animales fuera del bosque seco para beber. En lugar de recorrer un circuito de pastizal abierto, se mueve entre cuerpos de agua y espera.
El parque es mas conocido por sus leopardos, y Wilpattu tiene una poblacion saludable, pero nadie honesto le prometera uno. Los avistamientos de osos perezosos alcanzan su maximo en junio y julio cuando madura la fruta palu. Mas alla de esos dos, espere ciervos moteados, sambares, jabalies, bufalos, cocodrilos en los bordes de los villus y una larga lista de aves, desde cigueñas pintadas hasta aguilas culebreras.
Viaja en un 4x4 abierto con un conductor-rastreador que lee estas pistas a diario por radio y por huellas frescas en la arena. Aproximadamente cuatro horas se pasan dentro del parque. Tome la salida matutina, que comienza con la primera luz cuando el movimiento animal es mayor, o la salida de la tarde, que recorre las horas doradas hasta el cierre.
Sea claro sobre el viaje si reserva esto desde Colombo. Wilpattu esta aproximadamente a 180 kilometros al norte de la ciudad, y la carretera pasa por Puttalam en lugar de ir por autopista todo el camino. Con una salida antes del amanecer y un regreso tras la salida, esto se convierte en un dia largo de diez a doce horas, la mayor parte en un vehiculo. Los viajeros que ya se alojan en Anuradhapura, Negombo o cerca de la entrada al parque tienen una version mucho mas facil de la misma experiencia, y la recogida desde esos puntos esta disponible.
Lleve sombrero, gafas de sol y algo para amortiguar los baches, las pistas internas son de arena y roca irregular. La ropa neutra ayuda, asi como un objetivo zoom. This runs outdoors, so the operator can call it off for rain, wind or sea conditions, and that decision is usually made on the day. If they cancel, you choose: another date, or your money back in full. We do not keep a booking fee on a tour that did not run.

Today I had a wonderful experience at Will Pau National Park. The guide and his driver were truly attentive to my every need and answered all my questions. We toured the entire morning in the Jeep and were lucky enough to see several animals, including a leopard and an elephant. I highly recommend this experience.
Absolutely top-notch and highly recommended We spontaneously decided to do this for our Sri Lanka road trip, because Wilpattu is less known to tourists than other national parks. Our driver was on time at the pick-up spot and dropped us off on time too The tour was really awesome, and we were lucky enough to see a leopard too. The guide was friendly and gave us a lot of great info and background knowledge about the animals and the park. All in all, absolutely top-notch 😊

An incredible experience. Our guide, Nadhun, is a very nice person and very respectful, and even though he didn't know much English, he showed us everything we saw during the safari. He is also a great expert on the park, he took us through many areas, cutting corners where he thought best. We were very lucky because in addition to seeing a great variety of fauna, we were able to see four leopards. It was incredible, highly recommended, an unforgettable experience. The only thing I can say against it is that everything they offer you for food is very spicy, including breakfast, but that is secondary. A unique experience!
What a wonderful experience!! Our driver was great, reliable and the car was very comfortable for the 3.5hr journey each way. The system at the park was very smooth, as soon as we arrived our guide and driver were ready to welcome us and set off on safari. We were so lucky to see ALL the animals within the afternoon and our guide was very knowledgeable, sharing information throughout the trip. Our 7 year old was awestruck, a trip we will all remember and highly recommend.
Incredible! We saw the leopard!! I recommend doing it in the morning. When we returned around 10am it was full of wasps and if you are afraid of them it is a bad time.
Responsive guides, beautiful environment. No elephants for us, but the guide seemed to say it was better to come in the morning. Very satisfied nonetheless.
We had a missunderstanding when booking and the people were really nice amd helped us all the way through, the safari guy went through all kinds of roads to find all kind of animals and was great at spotting animals
It was really great. We were picked up at the pickup point as agreed and had the jeep to ourselves, which was of course a stroke of luck for us. We were even allowed to take our large luggage with us. Our driver wasn't fluent in English, but he was really friendly and had very trained eyes. He saw animals that we would never have seen. We saw everything from elephants, leopards, buffalo, monkeys, deer, various types of birds, rabbits and crocodiles. And all of that in "only" 5 hours... So our day was absolutely positive. I can only recommend it for the price.
