Hikkaduwa fue la primera ciudad de playa de Sri Lanka, y su arrecife es la razon. Un santuario de coral poco profundo se encuentra justo frente a la playa principal, y mas alla, un conjunto de puntos de buceo en el rango de diez a treinta metros da a la zona una temporada que va de noviembre a abril aproximadamente, cuando el monzon del suroeste no esta presente y la visibilidad es mejor.

El arrecife mismo sufrio un gran daño en el blanqueamiento de 1998 y de nuevo en el tsunami de 2004, y es honesto decir que es un arrecife en recuperacion en lugar de uno prístino. Lo que todavia ofrece es vida de peces y estructura: bancos de pargos y peces fusil, morenas, peces leon, peces loro pastando el coral duro, y tortugas verdes que pastan la hierba marina cerca de la costa.

Los pecios son el otro atractivo. Varios buques reposan a corta distancia en barco, incluido el Conch, un petrolero del siglo XIX en aguas poco profundas, y el Earl of Shaftesbury, ambos lo bastante desintegrados para ser aptos para atravesarlos a nado y fuertemente colonizados.

La sesion dura unas tres horas en total. Los buceadores certificados bucean a su nivel de cualificacion con un guia. Si nunca ha buceado, el tiempo se usa para una charla teorica y de habilidades, practica en aguas poco profundas y luego una inmersion de descubrimiento supervisada con un instructor presente en todo momento. El equipo se proporciona y el instructor fija una profundidad conservadora.

Hikkaduwa esta a unas dos horas al sur de Colombo por la autopista, y los traslados no forman parte de esta reserva, asi que planifique el viaje por separado o combinelo con una noche en la costa.
