La carretera costera al sur de Colombo enlaza la mayoria de lo que la gente imagina al pensar en el suroeste de Sri Lanka: pueblos pesqueros, plantaciones de coco, desembocaduras de rios y la larga linea del Oceano Indico a su derecha. Este viaje recorre todo el tramo desde Negombo hasta Bentota y de vuelta, con tres paradas que entre ellas cubren fauna, conservacion y uno de los mejores jardines del sur de Asia.

La primera parada es Kosgoda, donde los viveros recogen huevos de la playa y liberan a las crias de tortuga tras su nacimiento. Cinco especies nidifican en esta costa, incluidas las tortugas verdes y las lora olivacea, y los tanques suelen albergar tambien adultos rescatados. Es una visita corta y directa, ve los huevos, las crias y la razon por la que tantas no lo logran por si solas.

Luego viene el Madu Ganga. Esta es una laguna salobre y poco profunda salpicada de islas y atravesada por tuneles de manglar, y la recorre en un pequeño bote durante unas dos horas. Los canales se estrechan hasta que las raices se cierran arriba, los varanos se asolean en las orillas, los martines pescadores trabajan los bajios, y el barquero se detiene en una isla de canela donde el pelado todavia se hace a mano.

La ultima parada es Lunuganga, la finca de campo que el arquitecto Geoffrey Bawa paso cinco decadas remodelando. Es la expresion mas clara de lo que se conocio como modernismo tropical, terrazas, vistas enmarcadas, paisaje prestado y una colina que Bawa hizo recortar para que el lago se leyera correctamente desde la terraza. Incluso sin interes en la arquitectura, es un lugar hermoso para caminar.

Este es un dia de diez horas con aproximadamente cuatro horas y media de conduccion en el. Esta bien ritmado pero es largo, y estara de vuelta en Negombo por la noche en lugar de a media tarde.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip. We were picked up promptly by our own driver. He was very knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the day. It was a perfect way to explore the sights of Bentota.

Die Tour war sehr kurzweilig. Am besten war die Bootstour durch die Mangroven des Madu Ganga. Der Guide war freundlich und hilfsbereit. Beim Trinkgeld an die Einheimischen hat er mich aber ein wenig ins Messer laufen lassen und ich war am Ende ein stolze Summe los. Beim Trinkgeld bitte aufpassen! Am besten vorher erkundigen, was landesüblich ist. Unerfah
