El Pekoe Trail recorre 300 kilometros a traves del pais del te de Sri Lanka por senderos que ya existian, y la etapa 11 es la que los caminantes experimentados destacan por encima de las demas.

Comienza cerca del limite de Horton Plains, a unos 2.000 metros, y desciende por la escalera del diablo, una senda abierta por los britanicos para sacar el te de las plantaciones mas remotas del pais, en curvas por un escarpe con el valle abriendose en cada giro. Es una pista para jeep de nombre y una ruta de senderismo en la practica, y practicamente no hay nadie.

Udaweriya, al fondo, es el punto culminante. Fue una de las plantaciones de te mas altas y aisladas de Ceilan, y la fabrica alli lleva decadas abandonada, un gran edificio industrial victoriano vacio en un valle, con la maquinaria todavia dentro. Las viviendas de la plantacion cercanas siguen habitadas.

La caminata es realmente exigente: larga, mayormente en descenso sobre terreno irregular, y el descenso es mas duro para las rodillas de lo que una subida lo seria para los pulmones. Unas seis horas a pie.

No es un paseo pintoresco y no deberia reservarse como tal. Es la etapa para quienes vinieron a Sri Lanka a caminar.

Los dias al aire libre de Sri Lanka estan en las montañas y los rios. Horton Plains, sobre Nuwara Eliya, es un bucle de 9 kilometros en una meseta a 2.100 metros hasta World's End, un acantilado de 880 metros, y las cascadas de Baker, recorrido desde las 6:30 antes de que las nubes llenen la vista hacia las 10:00. La cordillera de Knuckles ofrece trekking de varios dias por bosque de niebla y pueblos. Kitulgala, en el rio Kelani donde se filmo El puente sobre el rio Kwai, es la base de rafting, rapidos de clase II a III en unos cinco kilometros, mejor de mayo a diciembre cuando el rio esta lleno. Las sanguijuelas son parte de los bosques humedos; la sal o los calcetines largos las mantienen a raya.

Nanu Oya, about 10 km and a 20-30 minute drive from the town. Nuwara Eliya has no station of its own, and tuk-tuk fares at Nanu Oya rise sharply the moment a train arrives.
