Ha Long la ciudad y no Ha Long la bahía, que casi todos los visitantes se saltan por completo.

Casi todo el que viene aquí se sube a un barco y se marcha. La ciudad que hay detrás del embarcadero es una capital provincial en activo de unos cientos de miles de habitantes, levantada con el dinero del carbón, y tiene lo que tiene una ciudad de carbón y mar, no lo que tiene un centro turístico.

El museo de Quang Ninh es la razón de hacer esta visita. Es una caja de cristal negro en el paseo marítimo, diseñada por el arquitecto español Salvador Perez Arroyo, y es de verdad uno de los mejores museos de Vietnam: el edificio refleja la bahía en su fachada, y dentro va de la geología marina de la región a la historia minera del carbón que construyó la ciudad, con un pozo de mina reconstruido.

La pagoda de Long Tien está al pie del monte Bai Tho y es la mayor de la ciudad, construida en la década de 1940 al estilo de los templos más antiguos de Hanói.

El mercado de marisco es donde la ciudad come de verdad. La pesca de Ha Long llega fresca y el mercado es el precio local y no el precio del embarcadero.

Esta es la salida para un día en que los cruceros por la bahía se cancelan por el tiempo, lo que pasa con cierta regularidad en los meses de tormentas, y para quien pasa una noche en la ciudad en lugar de en un barco.
