Hanói tiene mil años y es a la vez una capital colonial francesa, las dos cosas al mismo tiempo: las 36 calles del Barrio Antiguo, cada una con el nombre del gremio que comerciaba allí, el lago de la Espada Restituida en su centro, el Templo de la Literatura de 1070, el mausoleo donde yace expuesto Ho Chi Minh (solo por las mañanas, cerrado lunes y viernes y dos meses cada otoño) y el barrio francés arbolado, de villas y Ópera.
