Une journee de village balinais tourne autour de la cour familiale et du cycle du riz. Une cour familiale est un groupe mure de pavillons autour d'un temple domestique, dispose selon un schema fixe avec l'autel du cote de la montagne ; la cuisine et le grenier a riz ont leur propre place. Autour, les rizieres suivent le calendrier subak, plantation, inondation, recolte et sechage sur la route, et les champs sont travailles a la main et au motoculteur. Les matinees commencent tot : le marche a l'aube, les offrandes, le petit-dejeuner de riz et de cafe. Ce type de visite est accueilli par la famille, et quelques mots d'indonesien, un sarong pour le temple et les chaussures retirees a la porte sont les egards qui comptent.
