Description complète

Programme

Itineraries are customisable as per your request

The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

7:00-08 AM

Tokyo hotel pickup

Private vehicle collects your group from a hotel, apartment or station within Tokyo's 23 wards and drives southwest towards the Hakone caldera.

Late morning

Lake Ashi cruise

Board a sightseeing boat across the crater lake, with Mt. Fuji visible beyond the northern shore in clear weather.

Midday

Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani

Ride the cable car over the active sulphur vents and walk the viewing area, where eggs boiled in the springs come out black.

Lunch

Local meal

A stop for lunch chosen to suit the group's tastes; the bill is settled on the day.

Afternoon

Museum of your choice

Either the Hakone Open-Air Museum's hillside sculpture park and Picasso collection, or the Venetian Glass Museum.

Late afternoon

Hot springs

A soak at YUNESSUN (swimwear worn) or Mori no Yu (traditional nude bathing), with your guide briefing you on etiquette first.

Evening

Return to Tokyo

Drop-off back at your original address, roughly eleven hours after pickup.

Programme détaillé

07:00

Pickup window opens

Meet your guide and driver at your Tokyo address. Pickup can be shifted earlier or later on request when you book.

07:30

Drive to Hakone

Expressway run of roughly two hours with tolls covered. Wi-Fi and bottled water on board; a useful window for a briefing on the day.

10:00

Arrive in the caldera

First views of the Hakone rim. Your guide confirms the running order against the day's weather and visibility.

10:30

Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise

Cross the caldera lake by boat. The torii of Hakone Shrine stands in the water on the eastern shore and Fuji shows above the far ridgeline on clear days.

11:45

Hakone Ropeway

Cable car over the ridge, with the vent field opening up beneath the cabin on the approach to Owakudani.

12:15

Owakudani vents

Time on the viewing terraces among the steam and sulphur. Black eggs, boiled in the spring water and shelled on the spot, are the local ritual.

13:00

Lunch

A local restaurant, chosen with your preferences and any dietary needs in mind. Not included in the tour price.

14:15

Hakone Open-Air Museum or Venetian Glass Museum

Around two hours. The Open-Air Museum spreads sculpture over a hillside with the mountains behind it; the Venetian Glass Museum is smaller, indoors and strong in bad weather.

YUNESSUN for a swimsuit complex suited to families and mixed groups, or Mori no Yu for traditional separated bathing. Swimwear rental and any private-bath charge for guests with tattoos are paid locally.

17:45

The price does not cover attraction tickets, meals, swimwear rentals, tattoo-related private bath charges, pickups outside tokyo's 23 wards. Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Most of the day, and the boat is the point rather than the transport. Conditions occasionally force a change of route, which the operator decides on the morning and is not something anyone can promise around.
TheTokyoTravel. We book with them directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can confirm your place with the operator before taking it as final.
We confirm your booking with the operator before we treat it as final, and we need at least one day's notice outside India. Once it is confirmed you get the meeting point, the time and a contact number for the day. If the operator cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or late October to early December for autumn colour and the clearest skies. Contrary to most advice, October is Tokyo's wettest month (234.8 mm), not the June rainy season. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Tokyo guide.
Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card and budget ¥1,000–¥1,400 a day. Do not buy a JR Pass for a Tokyo-only trip — it costs ¥50,000 and excludes Tokyo Metro and Toei entirely. Note JR East raised Tokyo fares on 14 March 2026, so Metro is now cheaper than JR on several routes. See getting around Tokyo.
Shibuya Sky releases tickets only 14 days ahead at 00:00 JST — it cannot be booked months in advance. teamLab Borderless tickets drop at 12:00 JST on the 1st of each month. Our 3-day Tokyo itinerary lists every booking deadline.
Yes — a Japanese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. 1968 Vienna Convention permits are not valid in Japan. Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan need an official JAF translation instead. Arrange it before you fly; see the Tokyo go-kart guide.
Yes — the highway bus from Busta Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko takes about 1h 45m for ¥2,200. But manage expectations: Fuji is visible on 84% of December mornings and only 23% of July mornings, and cloud builds through the day, so go early. Details in our Mount Fuji day trip guide.
Edomae sushi (the Tokyo Bay style, where curing began as a workaround for having no refrigeration), monjayaki — a runny griddle dish unique to Tokyo with 80+ specialists on Tsukishima's Monja Street — and soba. Also worth knowing: Tsukiji Outer Market never closed; only the wholesale auction moved to Toyosu. See the Tokyo food guide.
The crossing itself takes about ninety seconds. What makes it worth an evening is one street back — Nonbei Yokocho, a lantern-lit alley of tiny bars a minute away that almost nobody who photographs the scramble walks into. Note street drinking is banned in the area 18:00–05:00 year-round, though the ordinance carries no fine. See the Shibuya Crossing guide.
Yes, some. Japan's cashless ratio reached 58% in 2025, so over 40% of payments are still cash — and card refusal is most likely at small independent izakaya, ramen ticket machines and market stalls. Tipping is not expected anywhere.
Only during the official season, roughly early July to early September — exact dates are announced each year per route. Outside it the mountain huts close, and climbing becomes a serious mountaineering proposition rather than a hike. A mandatory climbing fee and a daily cap now apply on the Yoshida route, with the other routes following. Full detail in our guide to climbing Mount Fuji.
Counterintuitively, winter — the cold, dry air gives the clearest views, while humid summer haze often hides the mountain entirely. That means the climbing season is also the worst viewing season. Where and when to look is covered in our Mount Fuji viewpoints guide.
An Odakyu pass covering the whole Hakone loop — Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi boats and buses — for less than buying the legs separately. How the loop works and which direction to travel it is in getting around Hakone.
It varies. Many traditional baths still refuse tattoos, some now allow them with cover stickers, and a private bath (kashikiri) is the reliable workaround. Bathing etiquette and how to find tattoo-friendly options are in our Hakone onsen guide.
It was listed in 2013 for its influence on art, literature and pilgrimage — not for its geology. That is why the listing includes places like Oshino Hakkai and the Sengen shrines, not just the peak itself. Background in our climbing Mount Fuji guide.
Two days lets you do the loop without rushing and still soak properly in an onsen — a single day works but means moving constantly. Our Hakone 2-day itinerary maps it out hour by hour.
Most Hakone and Mt. Fuji private tours here are priced for the whole party, not per traveller — the operator is providing a vehicle and a guide, so a group of four pays the same as a couple. The exceptions are the group summit climbs, which are genuinely per person. Each tour page states which model applies.
