Description complète

Programme

Itineraries are customisable as per your request

The schedule below is a suggested plan and can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Start

Meet at Fujisan Station

Meet your guide in Fujiyoshida and travel to the forest by private vehicle.

Early

Into the lava forest

An introduction to the 864 lava flow that the whole forest grew on, and how to read it in the ground.

Middle

The forest floor

Moss-covered basalt, roots crawling over rock, and the sharp boundaries between vegetation zones.

Later

Lava caves

The underground level: tubes left behind when molten rock drained out of a cooled lava crust.

End

Return to Fujisan Station

Private transport back to the meeting point.

Programme détaillé

00:00

Meet at Fujisan Station, Fujiyoshida

Your guide meets the party at the station in Yamanashi and explains the plan for the walk.

00:15

Private transfer to the forest

A short drive to the trailhead on Fuji's northwest flank, included in the tour.

00:40

First look at the lava flow

An introduction to the 864 Jogan eruption and the rock beneath your boots, which sets up everything you see afterwards.

01:00

Roots on bare rock

Walk among trees whose roots spread sideways across the basalt because the soil is only centimetres deep, gripping the surface instead of sinking.

01:30

Reading the vegetation zones

The guide shows where a thick flow left hard, bare ground and where a thinner one allowed deeper soil, producing abruptly different plant communities and isolated giant trees.

02:00

Moss, ferns and the small ecology

Close attention to the ground layer: moss beds, ferns and the life in the crevices of the lava.

02:20

Lava caves

The underground level. Tubes formed when the outer crust of a flow hardened and molten rock kept running out from within, leaving cold hollow passages.

02:45

Magnetic curiosities

A word on the iron-rich basalt that makes compass needles wander here, and why local knowledge matters on paths that all look alike.

03:00

Return to Fujisan Station

Private transport returns the party to the meeting point. Longer walks can be arranged.

The price does not cover personal expenses (food, drinks, souvenirs). Everything it does cover is listed in full on this page, so if something is not on that list, budget for it separately.
Expect uneven ground and some climbing, and mud after rain. Trainers with grip are the minimum and proper shoes are better. The pace follows the group, so tell your guide early if you want it slower rather than at the point you are struggling.

We confirm your booking with the operator before we treat it as final, and we need at least one day's notice outside India. Only during the official season, roughly early July to early September — exact dates are announced each year per route. Outside it the mountain huts close, and climbing becomes a serious mountaineering proposition rather than a hike. A mandatory climbing fee and a daily cap now apply on the Yoshida route, with the other routes following. Full detail in our guide to climbing Mount Fuji.
Counterintuitively, winter — the cold, dry air gives the clearest views, while humid summer haze often hides the mountain entirely. That means the climbing season is also the worst viewing season. Where and when to look is covered in our Mount Fuji viewpoints guide.
An Odakyu pass covering the whole Hakone loop — Tozan railway, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi boats and buses — for less than buying the legs separately. How the loop works and which direction to travel it is in getting around Hakone.
It varies. Many traditional baths still refuse tattoos, some now allow them with cover stickers, and a private bath (kashikiri) is the reliable workaround. Bathing etiquette and how to find tattoo-friendly options are in our Hakone onsen guide.
It was listed in 2013 for its influence on art, literature and pilgrimage — not for its geology. That is why the listing includes places like Oshino Hakkai and the Sengen shrines, not just the peak itself. Background in our climbing Mount Fuji guide.
Two days lets you do the loop without rushing and still soak properly in an onsen — a single day works but means moving constantly. Our Hakone 2-day itinerary maps it out hour by hour.
Most Hakone and Mt. Fuji private tours here are priced for the whole party, not per traveller — the operator is providing a vehicle and a guide, so a group of four pays the same as a couple. The exceptions are the group summit climbs, which are genuinely per person. Each tour page states which model applies.
