Anuradhapura fut la capitale du Sri Lanka pendant bien plus de mille ans, a partir d'environ le quatrieme siecle avant notre ere, et ce qui subsiste n'est pas un seul monument mais un champ de la taille d'une ville: des stupas en brique de la taille de petites collines, des fondations de monasteres, des bassins de bain, des pierres de garde et les reservoirs qui alimentaient tout cela. Elle se trouve a environ 200 kilometres au nord de Colombo, c'est pourquoi la plupart des gens la precipitent ou l'evitent entierement.

Ce voyage s'y attaque directement. Vous quittez Colombo tot sur l'autoroute et la route du nord, et votre chauffeur-guide utilise le trajet pour expliquer qui a construit quoi et pourquoi, le passage du sud-ouest humide a la zone seche est visible par la fenetre a mesure que riz et coco ceden la place aux broussailles, aux reservoirs et aux panneaux occasionnels d'elephants sauvages.

Mihintale est ou l'histoire commence. C'est sur cette colline au troisieme siecle avant notre ere que le moine Mahinda aurait rencontre le roi Devanampiya Tissa et introduit le bouddhisme sur l'ile. Un long escalier de granit grimpe devant des vestiges monastiques jusqu'a un dagoba sommital avec la plaine en contrebas. La montee est reguliere plutot qu'abrupte, mais il y a beaucoup de marches.

A Anuradhapura meme, vous voyez les grands stupas, le Ruwanwelisaya dans sa masse blanchie, la masse en brique plus ancienne du Jetavanaramaya et de l'Abhayagiri, aux cotes des pierres de lune et pierres de garde des quartiers monastiques. Le Sri Maha Bodhi, pousse a partir d'une bouture de l'arbre sous lequel le Bouddha a atteint l'eveil, reste un site de pelerinage actif et l'un des plus anciens arbres plantes documentes au monde.
