Colombo ne concentre pas ses sites dans un seul quartier praticable a pied, c’est pourquoi cette demi-journee se fait en voiture. Cinq heures suffisent pour enchainer les monuments, le temple, le parc et le quartier de marche sans passer tout le temps dans la circulation.

La Place de l’Independance est le premier arret et le plus directement politique. Le pavillon fut construit pour marquer la passation de pouvoir britannique en fevrier 1948, modele sur le hall d’audience des derniers rois kandyiens, et il est entoure de lions de pierre et de la statue du premier premier ministre. A proximite, le Hall de conference internationale commemoratif Bandaranaike est une piece de diplomatie des annees 1970 en beton, offerte par la Chine et toujours le principal lieu d’Etat de la ville.

Le parc Viharamahadevi vous donne la moitie verte du centre de Colombo, amenage par les Britanniques comme Victoria Park et renomme d’apres une reine des chroniques d’Anuradhapura. Le plus long arret est le temple Gangaramaya, ou environ cinquante minutes ne sont pas excessives : le complexe mele l’architecture sri-lankaise, thailandaise, indienne et chinoise en une seule enceinte et ses salles de musee sont remplies d’objets donnes, de Bouddhas de jade a une Rolls-Royce ancienne.

Pettah cloture le tourisme. Le tour traverse les rues de marche plutot que de s’arreter longtemps, ce qui suffit pour voir comment le quartier fonctionne, chaque rue etant consacree a un seul commerce derriere les briques rayees rouge et blanc de la mosquee Jami Ul-Alfar.

Le dejeuner est la raison pour laquelle beaucoup de gens reservent ceci. La cuisine jaffnaise vient du nord tamoul et se distingue de la cuisine du sud : plus indienne dans son usage des epices, plus lourde en curry de crabe et de fruits de mer, et connue pour le bouillon de fruits de mer odiyal kool. Servie sur une feuille de bananier et mangee avec la main droite, c’est un vrai repas plutot qu’une degustation, et il vaut mieux arriver avec de l’appetit.
