Ceci associe deux sites separes de dix minutes dans la zone seche : les temples troglodytes de Dambulla, qui sont une question d’interieurs peints et de continuite du culte, et Pidurangala, qui est une question d’escalade et de vue. C’est une journee de quatorze heures depuis Colombo avec environ six heures et demie de conduite, traitez-la donc comme un veritable engagement.

Dambulla est le plus grand et le mieux conserve complexe de temples troglodytes de Sri Lanka, en usage continu comme monastere depuis le premier siecle avant notre ere. Cinq grottes taillees dans le surplomb d’une colline de granit abritent plus de 150 figures de Bouddha ainsi que des statues de rois et de divinites hindoues. La peinture en fait l’attrait : chaque plafond et chaque mur est couvert, les murales suivant la courbe de la roche en ocres et rouges renouveles au fil des siecles. La plus grande grotte abrite un Bouddha couche de 14 metres taille dans la roche.

Pidurangala est le contrepoint. C’est le rocher immediatement au nord de Sigiriya, et c’etait un monastere bien avant que Kashyapa ne construise sa citadelle a cote. La montee prend environ une demi-heure : des marches en pierre d’abord, passant devant un Bouddha couche en brique, puis une veritable escalade de rochers pour le dernier tronçon ou vous utilisez vos mains. La recompense au sommet est la vue de Sigiriya emergeant de la foret, que vous ne pouvez pas obtenir depuis Sigiriya meme.

Beaucoup choisissent Pidurangala car c’est le plus calme et le moins cher des deux rochers, sans files d’attente sur les escaliers. Si vous voulez plutot grimper Sigiriya, c’est un voyage different avec un billet different, soyez donc clair a la reservation.

La journee comprend un petit dejeuner sur la route, une heure et demie pour le dejeuner pres de Sigiriya, et le long trajet de retour. Votre chauffeur-guide gere l’itineraire et les horaires. Partez tot : les grottes comme le rocher sont bien plus agreables avant le milieu de la journee, et le trajet de retour est plus facile de jour.
