Description complète

La route cotiere au sud de Colombo traverse une serie de villes qui ont vecu de la cannelle, de la fibre de coco et de la peche bien avant l’arrivee du tourisme, et cette journee la suit jusqu’a Galle. L’autoroute vous eloigne rapidement de la ville, et la journee se passe en courts trajets entre les arrets plutot qu’un long trajet unique.

Bentota est le premier arret, une embouchure de riviere ou la Bentota Ganga rejoint la mer. De la, l’itineraire continue vers Kosgoda, ou une ecloserie de tortues marines collecte les oeufs de la plage, les incube et relache les bebes tortues. Cinq des sept especes de tortues marines du monde nidifient sur ce tronçon de cote, et le personnel de l’ecloserie explique les pressions qu’elles subissent du braconnage, des filets et du developpement cotier.

Le safari en bateau sur la Madu Ganga est le plus long arret de la journee. La riviere s’ouvre sur un lagon peu profond parseme de petites iles, et le bateau se glisse par des tunnels de mangrove ou les racines se referment au-dessus. Vous passerez devant des iles de cannelle ou l’ecorce est encore pelee a la main, de petits temples sur leurs propres ilots, des fermes piscicoles et, si la lumiere s’y prete, des varans et des martins-pecheurs le long des berges. Environ quatre-vingt-dix minutes a deux heures sur l’eau.

Le dejeuner se prend sur la cote a Hikkaduwa, puis c’est Galle. Le fort a ete construit par les Portugais et reconstruit par les Hollandais au 17e siecle, et les remparts enferment toujours une ville active de maisons de l’epoque hollandaise, d’eglises, d’une mosquee et du phare sur le mur de mer. C’est un site classe au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO et il se prete bien a la marche : les rues interieures sont assez petites pour qu’une heure a pied en couvre la plupart.

Le trajet de retour vers Colombo prend quelques heures. Dans l’ensemble, c’est une journee complete, mais plus douce que les excursions vers l’interieur, avec la plupart du temps passe hors du vehicule.

We had a good taste of the South on this one day trip. We really enjoyed visiting Bentota beach, Madu river safari and walking around Galle. Range was accommodating, providing good information, checked to ensure we were happy and made photo stops along the way. It was a good way of filling in the day before we flew out late that night.

Aaron was a great guide. I felt very safe and reassured as a solo female traveller. The itinerary makes for quite a fulfilling day if you are short on time and want to tick Galle and some sights along the way. Vehicle was so comfortable that I kept going to sleep, excellent air conditioning for the hot weather!!

Had a great time during the overall trip. Danesh who was our guide and our driver did a great job! Especially for his flexibility and good thinking in introducing us to some extra free entry stops along the way to Galle, such as going to a gemstone mine and a Tsunami photo museum, whilst still remaining efficient with the timing for a jam-packed day. Spots were all very interesting and varied. It was no fuss of a trip! Highly recommend!

We had a very enjoyable time on our tour last week. Our driver Dhanesh picked us up promptly and drove us around in his comfortable car. He stuck to the itinerary outlined on the tour description but also mentioned that if there was anything of interest we wanted to do that wasn't on the list, he would be happy to make that happen for us. All the locations were very fun and beautiful, and we learnt many different things. The trip was well organised, has a comfy transport, and we saw a lot beautiful places. The restaurant for lunch was good as well and we like the food there. Our guide Naveen was amazing.
