Kandy fut le dernier royaume independant de l’ile, resistant dans les collines jusqu’a ce que les Britanniques le prennent en 1815, et le Temple de la Dent sacree a son centre est la raison pour laquelle il compte encore. La relique qui y est abritee etait historiquement ce qui legitimait un roi sri-lankais : quiconque detenait la dent detenait le droit de regner. C’est un lieu de culte actif, le plus anime pendant les pujas quotidiens quand les tambours jouent a la porte du sanctuaire.

Le trajet depuis Colombo monte vers l’interieur a travers Kegalle et Mawanella, et la route elle-meme fait partie de la journee. Vous passez devant des plantations de caoutchouc, des etals vendant des noix de cajou et de l’ananas, et les jardins d’epices pour lesquels ce tronçon est connu. Le tour s’arrete a l’un d’eux pour une marche a travers la cannelle, la cardamome, le poivre et la vanille.

Pinnawala, pres de Kegalle, est l’endroit de l’arret aux elephants de la journee. Cela a commence dans les annees 1970 comme un foyer pour les elephanteaux orphelins et est devenu l’un des endroits les plus visites de cet itineraire, avec un troupeau conduit jusqu’a la riviere Maha Oya. C’est un environnement gere et captif plutot que sauvage, et il vaut mieux le savoir en y allant.

Apres Kandy, l’itineraire comprend les jardins botaniques royaux de Peradeniya, amenages sur un meandre de la riviere Mahaweli sur un terrain qui appartenait autrefois a la royaute kandyienne. La serre d’orchidees, le gigantesque figuier de Java et l’allee de palmiers sont les pieces maitresses, et une heure passe vite. Le dernier arret est une fabrique de the sur les pentes de la plantation, ou vous suivez la feuille depuis le bac de fletrissage jusqu’au rouleau puis au secheur et degustez le resultat.

Le deplacement se fait en voiture privee climatisee avec votre propre chauffeur, le rythme est donc le votre dans une certaine mesure. Soyez realiste sur la duree : avec une prise en charge tot le matin et un retour apres la nuit tombee, c’est une journee de treize heures couvrant environ 250 kilometres de routes de montagne, et la conduite en fait vraiment partie.

Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south. July or August — but the dates move every year with the lunar calendar, so any guide naming a fixed week is guessing. It runs ten nights and ends on the Nikini poya. Book accommodation on the route six to twelve months ahead. Details in our Esala Perahera guide.
Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
Two nights. One full day for the town — Bahirawakanda, Peradeniya gardens, the lake and the evening puja — and a second for a hike, a village day or the cultural triangle. Our Kandy 2-day itinerary lays it out hour by hour.
The centre and the lake circuit are walkable. For anything up a hill or out of town, take a tuk-tuk — roughly LKR 100-150/km on the meter, and ride-hailing apps price it automatically with no negotiation. See getting around Kandy.
December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
