La journee commence tot, avec un van qui vous recupere a Colombo ou Kalutara pour le trajet vers le sud le long de la route cotiere jusqu’a Balapitiya. Prevoyez environ deux heures et demie : c’est l’ancienne route a travers les villes de peche et les plantations de cocotiers, se deplacant au rythme des villages qu’elle traverse.

A Balapitiya, la Madu Ganga s’elargit en un lagon peu profond parseme de petites iles, et la croisiere en bateau dure environ deux heures. L’itineraire quitte l’eau ouverte pour des canaux etroits couverts par les racines de mangrove, passe des nasses a crevettes et des petites plantations de cannelle, et s’arrete a un des temples insulaires. Martins-pecheurs, varans et troupes de macaques le long des rives sont des observations ordinaires plutot que des coups de chance, et les bateliers savent ou ralentir.

Une des iles est consacree a la cannelle, ce qui vaut la peine de comprendre en s’y trouvant. Sri Lanka cultive la vraie cannelle de Ceylan, une ecorce plus douce et plus stratifiee que la cassia vendue comme cannelle dans la plupart du monde, et le pelage se fait encore a la main avec une tige de laiton et un couteau courbe. Le dernier arret est le Projet de Conservation des Tortues Marines de Kosgoda, ou une heure guidee couvre les bassins d’ecloserie, la plage de nidification et l’atelier Turtle Guardian. Cinq especes viennent nidifier sur ce tronçon de cote, et le discours est honnete sur ce qu’une ecloserie peut et ne peut pas resoudre : le braconnage des oeufs, la pollution lumineuse de la route cotiere et l’enchevetrement dans les filets font tous partie de la conversation.

Soyez realiste sur la duree. C’est une journee de dix heures, dont environ cinq passees sur la route dans les deux sens combines. Cela convient aux voyageurs qui veulent les mangroves et l’ecloserie sans reserver une nuit sur la cote sud, et c’est une longue journee pour les tres jeunes enfants.
