Wilpattu est le plus grand parc national de Sri Lanka et le plus calme des parcs a leopards. Alors que Yala peut rassembler des dizaines de jeeps autour d’une seule observation, Wilpattu couvre bien plus de terrain avec bien moins de vehicules, un leopard ici est donc generalement pour vous seul. Le compromis est honnete : la foret de broussailles dense cache bien les animaux, et vous pouvez rouler une heure entre deux observations.
Le parc tire son nom et son caractere des villus, des lacs naturels d’eau de pluie bordes de sable disperses dans la foret. Les animaux viennent boire aux villus, donc l’itineraire du safari va de l’un a l’autre. Les ours paresseux sont une possibilite reelle ici, particulierement en juin et juillet quand le fruit de palu murit et qu’ils grimpent pour l’attraper. Leopards, cerfs tachetes, sambars, buffles d’eau, crocodiles des marais, sangliers et une longue liste d’oiseaux residents et migrateurs completent le reste.
C’est un voyage prive, la jeep et le pisteur sont donc les votres. Cela compte plus qu’il n’y parait. Cela signifie que vous pouvez vous asseoir a un villu et attendre plutot que d’etre deplace, et que le chauffeur peut suivre les cris d’alarme plutot qu’un circuit fixe.
Soyez realiste sur la journee. Wilpattu se trouve a environ 180 kilometres au nord de Colombo et le trajet dure environ trois heures et demie dans chaque sens, la prise en charge se fait donc avant l’aube et vous rentrerez tard. En comptant le trajet, le circuit dans le parc et le dejeuner, c’est une journee de douze a quatorze heures. Si vous preferez ne pas le faire d’une seule traite, une nuit pres de l’entree du parc en fait un bien meilleur voyage.
Les frais d’entree et le dejeuner sont deja couverts, ce qui evite la recherche habituelle de liquide au guichet du parc.
Les mois les plus secs, d’environ fevrier a octobre, offrent la meilleure observation de la faune, les animaux se concentrant pres de l’eau. Le parc ferme parfois certaines sections apres de fortes pluies.

Perfect day, my guide Nelum was very nice, he was on time and a good driver, he found a leopard up in the trees so I got some realy good pictures.
We were able to see a lot of animals, even a leopard from a distance, so we were very lucky and our driver responded to our wishes, it was a very successful trip. And we also drove away from the mass tourism, except for the leopard and bear, then more and more came.
Our driver Raveen was very polite & knowledgeable. The drive was very comfortable to the national park. Our safari jeep driver did his best to show us as many animals as possible and was quick to spot hidden birds & animals. Then we stopped for a very nice lunch at Wilpattu Coco Hut Village Foods - the owner was very friendly & the food was delicious & plentiful.
Great experience, organization was perfect. we saw 3 leopards , elephants , crocodiles and many other animals. highly recommended !
Had a really great day In the morning at 4:30 a.m., the driver (Emila) picked us up and we went to Wilpattu National Park. At the park, we were paired with another driver for the safari. Emila also came with us. We can't say anything other than that we had a really good safari. The safari driver and Emila were both really good. There was room for information, but he also made sure we saw as many animals as possible. It's really nice that he doesn't just stick to the main path, but also takes the side roads. Highly recommended!
The driver was very friendly and drove very smoothly. The Jeep driver was also very nice; in addition, a national park guide was present, who could tell us a lot about the animals in the park. The included lunch at a buffet restaurant was also okay. We didn’t see many animals because there had been a storm the night before, and many areas of the park were impassable. Overall, it was a great tour; however, for the price, we probably wouldn’t book it again—although it was certainly fair for the service provided!
