A noter avant de reserver : le Departement de la Conservation de la Faune a ferme les Blocs 1 et 2 du parc national de Yala du 14 septembre au 15 octobre 2026 en raison de la secheresse, les safaris dans ces blocs ne peuvent donc pas se derouler a ces dates. Les Blocs 3 a 6 restent ouverts, et Udawalawe et Wilpattu ne sont pas affectes, pour un voyage pendant cette periode, nous vous contacterons pour deplacer le safari vers l’un de ces parcs ou vers une date apres le 15 octobre. Udawalawe est le parc le plus fort pour les elephants ; Wilpattu offre des observations de leopards plus calmes.

Yala se trouve dans le sud-est aride de l’ile et c’est la raison pour laquelle la plupart des visiteurs de Sri Lanka rentrent en parlant de leopards. Le Bloc Un, la section ouverte aux vehicules de safari, porte la plus forte densite enregistree de leopards ou que ce soit, et comme la broussaille est basse, les animaux sont veritablement visibles plutot que simplement presents. Ours paresseux, elephants, cerfs tachetes, crocodiles et une longue liste d’oiseaux completent le reste.

Le voyage est organise en prive, ce qui compte ici de deux facons. Vous avez votre propre 4x4 et chauffeur-pisteur plutot qu’un banc partage, le vehicule peut donc attendre quelque part sur un rapport radio plutot que de continuer selon un horaire, et vous pouvez choisir un creneau matinal ou d’apres-midi. Les matinees sont plus fraiches et la lumiere est meilleure tot ; les apres-midis produisent souvent plus de mouvement quand la chaleur baisse.

Le safari lui-meme dure environ trois heures a l’interieur du parc. Un bon pisteur passe une grande partie du temps immobile et a l’ecoute : les cris d’alarme des cerfs tachetes et des langurs sont ce qui localise reellement un leopard. Les observations ne sont jamais garanties, et tout operateur qui en promet une vend quelque chose. Le parc est aussi un ecosysteme actif avec des regles strictes sur le fait de rester dans le vehicule et de suivre les pistes.

Le trajet est le cout honnete de faire Yala en une journee depuis Colombo. Le parc se trouve a l’autre bout de l’ile au sud-est, et le trajet est long dans les deux sens meme en utilisant l’autoroute du sud pour la section rapide. Le depart se fait avant l’aube pour un safari matinal, et vous serez de retour tard.

Le dejeuner, les frais de parc et la jeep sont tous geres, la journee ne necessite donc rien de vous au-dela du reveil matinal. Si votre emploi du temps permet une nuit a Tissamaharama a la place, c’est la facon plus confortable de voir le parc, mais ceci est une option viable d’une seule journee.
