Hikkaduwa fut la premiere station balneaire de Sri Lanka, et son recif en est la raison. Un sanctuaire corallien peu profond se trouve directement au large de la plage principale, et au-dela, un ensemble de sites de plongee entre dix et trente metres offre a la region une saison qui s’etend d’environ novembre a avril, lorsque la mousson du sud-ouest est absente et que la visibilite est a son meilleur.

Le recif lui-meme a subi de lourds dommages lors du blanchissement de 1998 puis du tsunami de 2004, et il est honnete de dire qu’il s’agit d’un recif en convalescence plutot que d’un recif intact. Ce qu’il offre encore, c’est une vie piscicole et une structure riches : bancs de vivaneaux et de fusiliers, murenes, poissons-lions, poissons-perroquets broutant le corail dur, et tortues vertes qui se nourrissent de l’herbier pres du rivage.

Les epaves sont l’autre attrait. Plusieurs navires reposent a courte distance en bateau, dont le Conch, un petrolier du dix-neuvieme siecle en eau peu profonde, et l’Earl of Shaftesbury, tous deux suffisamment disloques pour etre favorables aux traversees a la nage et fortement colonises.

La seance dure environ trois heures au total. Les plongeurs certifies plongent a leur niveau de qualification avec un guide. Si vous n’avez jamais plonge, le temps est utilise pour un briefing theorique et pratique, un entrainement en eau peu profonde puis une plongee de decouverte supervisee avec un instructeur present tout au long. L’equipement est fourni et l’instructeur fixe une profondeur prudente.

Hikkaduwa se trouve a environ deux heures au sud de Colombo par l’autoroute, et les transferts ne sont pas inclus dans cette reservation, prevoyez donc le trajet separement ou combinez-le avec une nuit sur la cote.
