Deux heures et demie à peindre votre propre non la, le chapeau conique vietnamien, avec un artiste qui travaille en anglais.

Le chapeau lui-même est la première surprise. C'est de la feuille de palmier cousue au fil sur une armature de bambou, et les meilleurs, ceux de Hué, sont faits si finement qu'en les levant vers la lumière on voit un poème ou une image travaillés entre les couches, d'où le nom de non bai tho, le chapeau-poème. On vous racontera comment le vôtre a été fabriqué avant que vous n'y posiez un pinceau.

La peinture est de l'acrylique sur la surface de la feuille, qui se comporte autrement que le papier : la feuille a un grain et une courbe, les traits tirent donc, et l'instructeur vous fait commencer sur une petite zone pour prendre la main avant de vous engager sur toute la surface.

Aucune expérience du dessin n'est attendue. La plupart des gens partent d'un motif traditionnel, lotus, dragon, une rue de Hoi An, et l'artiste en pose les grandes lignes avec vous.

Un tablier est fourni, et il y a de l'eau potable, parce que deux heures et demie penché sur un chapeau à Saigon, c'est un travail chaud.

Vous rapportez le chapeau. Il est léger et il se range, ce qu'on ne peut pas dire de la plupart des choses achetées au Vietnam.

A pleasant activity, but it’s a pity that no real guidance is provided. You are given a hat, some paint, and sample designs, but the “workshop” stops there - you’re left to manage on your own with the brushes. It’s disappointing.
