Junagarh Fort completely surprised me. Because it isn't perched on a hill you walk straight into these gorgeous painted chambers and carved balconies, and our guide knew every detail about the 1593 construction. The private car was blissfully cool between stops. The Rat Temple afterwards was surreal in the best way. A brilliantly balanced day of history and the truly unusual.

We booked this as a one-way sightseeing transfer toward Jaisalmer and it worked perfectly. The driver was punctual, the AC car spotless, and we never felt rushed at either stop. The Prachina Museum inside the fort was a highlight for me with its old royal costumes and weapons. Excellent value at sixty dollars considering fuel, tolls and a proper guide were all covered.

Visiting Karni Mata was on my bucket list and this tour made it easy. The guide explained the temple etiquette before we went in, so removing shoes and walking barefoot among the rats felt manageable rather than scary. We even spotted one of the lucky white rats. Junagarh Fort earlier in the day was equally memorable. Warm, knowledgeable service throughout.

A genuinely fascinating day, though be ready for an early start and a fair bit of heat at the fort courtyards. The Rat Temple is not for the faint-hearted and walking in socks near so many rats took me a moment to adjust to. Our guide was patient and the car comfortable. Just bring cash for the entry tickets, which aren't included in the price.

Loved having a private car and guide just for the two of us. We lingered far longer at Junagarh than a group tour would allow, poking into the decorated palaces and quiet courtyards. Karni Mata was extraordinary and strangely peaceful. The driver suggested a fantastic little spot for Bikaneri snacks at lunch. Ten hours flew by and felt wonderfully unhurried.

The contrast between the two sites is what makes this tour special. Junagarh is a masterpiece of Rajput and Mughal design, all intricate stonework and colour, while the Rat Temple is unlike anything in Europe. Our guide bridged the two worlds beautifully and answered every question. The cool car was a relief in the desert climate. Highly recommended for curious travellers.

We travelled with my parents and the flat approach to Junagarh Fort meant no steep climbing, which they appreciated. My mother chose to view the Rat Temple from the entrance while the rest of us went inside, and the guide was completely accommodating. The whole day felt personal and relaxed. Booking was simple and our hotel pickup in Bikaner was right on time.

Solid tour with a knowledgeable guide and a clean, air-conditioned vehicle. My only caveat is that the onward drive toward Jaisalmer is long, so the day is more of a heritage transfer than a leisurely loop, and by late afternoon we were tired. Still, seeing Junagarh Fort and Karni Mata in one go is efficient and worthwhile. Just plan the timing and start early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Over roughly 10 hours you'll explore Junagarh Fort, built in 1593 AD, including the palaces, carved balconies and courtyards, then the Prachina Museum inside the fort complex with its royal portraits, costumes and weapons. You then continue to the Karni Mata Temple (the Rat Temple) in Deshnoke. The tour is designed as a heritage journey en route from Bikaner toward Jaisalmer, so it works well as a full sightseeing day or a purposeful transfer.
This is a fully private tour. All transfers and sightseeing are by private AC vehicle with your own professional guide, so it's just your party in the car. That means you set the pace, linger longer at Junagarh Fort or the Rat Temple if you wish, and won't wait on a larger group. It's ideal for couples, families and small friend groups.
The tour is $60 for the option shown. That price includes all transfers and sightseeing by private vehicle, plus toll tax, parking, driver allowance and fuel, and a professional guide. Please note that monument entry tickets for Junagarh Fort, the Prachina Museum and any temple donations are not listed as included, so budget a small amount extra for those on the day.
The listed inclusions cover your private vehicle, all road costs and the professional guide, but they do not explicitly include monument entry fees. Junagarh Fort and the Prachina Museum charge modest admission, and there may be a separate camera fee. We recommend carrying a little cash in rupees for tickets, and your guide can point you to the correct counters so you don't overpay.
Yes, because this is a private-vehicle tour, your driver-guide will collect you directly. Since the day is built around the Bikaner-to-Jaisalmer heritage route, it works both as a round trip from your Bikaner hotel and as a one-way sightseeing transfer toward Jaisalmer. Please share your exact hotel name and pickup time when booking so we can confirm the logistics that suit your itinerary.
The Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke, about 30 km from Bikaner, is a working Hindu temple famous as the Rat Temple, home to thousands of rats known as *kabbas* that devotees consider sacred and protected. They roam the marble courtyard freely, and spotting a rare white rat is thought to bring good fortune. It's an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experience, though visitors who are squeamish should know the rats really are present throughout.
Yes. As at most Hindu temples, you must remove your shoes before entering Karni Mata, and inside you'll walk barefoot or in socks on the marble floor where the rats roam. Many travelers bring a spare pair of thick socks for comfort and hygiene. Stepping on a rat is considered very unlucky and offensive, so tread gently, and your guide will brief you on temple etiquette beforehand.
The walking is moderate. Junagarh Fort involves exploring multiple courtyards, chambers and staircases on foot over uneven historic stone, and the temple visit adds more time on your feet. Unlike most Rajasthan forts, Junagarh was not built on a hilltop, so there's no steep climb to reach it, which makes it gentler than many. Wear comfortable, closed shoes and take your time.
It can be, with a few considerations. The private pace and AC car make it comfortable for families and seniors, and the flat approach to Junagarh Fort helps those who can't manage steep climbs. However, the Rat Temple is not for everyone — young children may be startled and some elders prefer to admire it from the entrance. Let us know your group's ages and comfort level and the guide will adapt.
An early start is best so you cover Junagarh Fort in the cooler morning and reach Karni Mata before midday heat. The most pleasant months are October to March, when Bikaner's desert climate is comfortable. April to June brings intense heat often above 40°C, so if you travel then, an early morning departure and plenty of water are essential.
Dress for a desert climate and a place of worship: light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful for Karni Mata Temple. Wear comfortable closed walking shoes you can slip off easily at the temple, and bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the open fort courtyards. A light scarf is useful for sun and for covering up at the temple.
Photography is generally allowed at Junagarh Fort, though a separate camera or video fee may apply at the ticket counter, and some interior chambers or the museum restrict flash. At Karni Mata Temple you can usually photograph the courtyard and the rats, but always be respectful of worshippers and follow any posted signs. Your guide will tell you exactly where cameras are and aren't welcome.
Meals are not included in the $60 price. On a 10-hour day you'll want a break, and your guide and driver can recommend a good local restaurant in Bikaner or along the route — the city is famous for its snacks and sweets, including its namesake *Bikaneri bhujia*. Vegetarian options are plentiful in Rajasthan, and you can let your guide know any dietary needs.
Yes, all sightseeing is by private AC car, which is a real comfort in Bikaner's heat. The itinerary follows the Bikaner-to-Jaisalmer heritage route, with Karni Mata Temple around 30 km south of Bikaner. If you're continuing to Jaisalmer it's a long desert drive of several hours, so an early start keeps the day relaxed rather than rushed. Confirm your end point when booking.
Millions of pilgrims visit Karni Mata every year and it is considered safe to walk through. That said, you'll be barefoot or in socks near the rats, so bring hand sanitizer, avoid touching the animals, and wash your hands and feet afterward. If you have open cuts on your feet or are uncomfortable with the idea, you can view the sacred inner courtyard from the threshold instead.
Simply select the $60 option and complete your booking online, then share your Bikaner hotel, preferred pickup time and whether you want a round trip or a one-way transfer to Jaisalmer. We'll confirm your private guide and AC vehicle. Because it's a private departure, we recommend booking a day or two ahead so we can lock in your guide and timing.
