Detailed Itinerary

Chittorgarh Fort Day Trip from Udaipur – Explore the Grandeur of Mewar

Experience the rich history and heroic legacy of Rajasthan on this fascinating 8-hour day trip from Udaipur to Chittorgarh Fort, one of the largest and most impressive forts in India. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chittorgarh Fort stands as a powerful symbol of Rajput courage, sacrifice, and architectural brilliance. With your knowledgeable local guide, explore the magnificent palaces, towering monuments, and sacred temples that tell the stories of the legendary rulers of Mewar.

Your journey begins with a comfortable drive from Udaipur through the scenic landscapes of the Aravalli region. As you travel toward Chittorgarh, you will pass rural villages, farmland, and rolling hills, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Rajasthan. Upon arrival, your guide will introduce you to the history of the fort, which spreads across a vast hilltop and covers nearly 700 acres.

The first highlight of your visit is the impressive Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha to celebrate his victory over the Sultan of Malwa. This magnificent nine-storey tower is beautifully decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting Hindu deities and historic scenes. From the top, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the massive fort complex.

Next, visit the elegant Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame), a beautiful Jain monument dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara, Adinath. This slender tower is older than Vijay Stambh and features detailed carvings that reflect the artistic skills of the craftsmen of that era.

Continue your exploration with a visit to the Rana Kumbha Palace, one of the most significant structures within the fort complex. This palace was once the residence of the royal family of Mewar and is associated with several important historical events. The ruins of the palace still reflect its former grandeur and provide insight into the lifestyle of the Rajput rulers. Your guide will also share the legendary stories of Rani Padmini and the heroic sacrifices of the Rajput warriors who defended the fort.

During the tour, you will also have the opportunity to visit several ancient temples located inside the fort, each showcasing beautiful architecture and spiritual significance. From the fort’s ramparts and viewpoints, admire breathtaking views of the surrounding plains, lakes, and distant hills.

Midway through the tour, enjoy a relaxing break at a local restaurant where you will taste a traditional Rajasthani thali, a flavorful meal that includes a variety of regional dishes, breads, lentils, vegetables, and sweets. This authentic dining experience allows you to savor the rich culinary heritage of Rajasthan.

After exploring the major attractions of Chittorgarh Fort and immersing yourself in its remarkable history, begin your comfortable return journey to Udaipur. This memorable day trip offers the perfect blend of history, culture, architecture, and local cuisine, making it an unforgettable experience for anyone visiting Rajasthan.

Chittorgarh completely exceeded what I imagined. The Vijay Stambh is staggering up close, and our guide climbed part way up with us explaining every carving. Having a private car meant we set our own rhythm and never felt rushed. The drive from Udaipur is long but the AC and comfy Toyota made it painless. A proper deep dive into Mewar history.

Superb day out. Our chauffeur picked us up early which was the right call, we beat the heat and had the Rana Kumbha Palace almost to ourselves. The guide at the fort was genuinely knowledgeable, not just reciting dates but telling the stories behind the sieges. We added the Rajasthani thali and it was one of the best meals of our trip.

Really enjoyed the fort itself, it is enormous and the Kirti Stambh was a highlight. My only honest note is the drive each way eats a big part of the eight hours, so you spend a lot of time in the car. That said the vehicle was spotless and the driver careful. Bring water, it was hot even in late September. Worth doing.

We travelled as a family with two teenagers and it worked brilliantly. The private car let us stop when we needed and the kids loved the sheer scale of the place. Our guide tailored the walk so we saw the main towers without exhausting everyone. Fuel, tolls and parking were all handled, so no fumbling for cash on the road. Great value for a private trip.

A memorable escape from Udaipur. December weather was perfect for walking the ramparts and the light on the sandstone was beautiful for photography. Our guide had a real passion for the Rajput legends and made Rana Kumbha Palace come alive. The optional thali afterwards was delicious and generous. Everything ran smoothly from pickup to drop off.

Outstanding guide who clearly loved his subject. Chittorgarh is so much bigger than I expected and having the car take us between the far corners of the site saved our legs. The Vijay Stambh views over the plains were unforgettable. Booking was easy and confirmation came through quickly. Highly recommend pairing an early start with this one.

The fort is magnificent and our guide was warm and informative. Just be prepared for real heat by April, the hilltop is very exposed and there is a lot of walking on uneven stone. A hat and plenty of water are a must. The car was comfortable and cool which was a relief on the return leg. A solid, worthwhile day trip overall.

One of the best history days we had in Rajasthan. Our chauffeur was punctual and friendly, and the local guide at Chittorgarh turned a pile of ancient walls into gripping stories of courage and sacrifice. The Kirti Stambh detail is incredible. Ninety dollars for a private car, driver and guide for the full day felt like excellent value. Would book again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chittorgarh sits roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Udaipur, so each way of the round trip takes a couple of hours by car. On this 8-hour tour that still leaves a comfortable stretch of time to explore the fort itself, though a good chunk of the day is genuine driving time. Because the tour runs by private AC car, you can stop, rest, or adjust the pace along the way rather than being tied to a fixed group schedule.
Yes, you get a private Toyota AC car for the full day round trip from Udaipur to Chittorgarh and back, used by your party alone. The US$90 option covers all tax, toll, fuel and parking fees, so there are no hidden add-ons for the drive. You also travel with an English-speaking chauffeur, leaving you free to enjoy the Rajasthan countryside on the way.
An English-speaking local guide joins you at Chittorgarh and brings the site to life as you explore. They'll walk you through the headline monuments, the Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), the Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) and Rana Kumbha Palace, sharing the legends of Rajput courage and the Mewar rulers. Having a local guide makes a huge difference at a fort this vast and layered with history. For a similar guided experience closer to town, travelers also enjoy the Udaipur City Tour with an approved guide.
The listed inclusions cover the car, chauffeur, guide and all road costs, but the fort's monument entry tickets are typically paid separately on site. Fees for Indian heritage monuments are modest, and your guide can point you to the ticket counter so you're not left guessing. We recommend carrying a little cash in Indian rupees for entry tickets and any small extras.
Chittorgarh is one of the largest forts in India, so expect a fair amount of walking across the hilltop complex, often on uneven stone and gentle slopes. Climbing the Vijay Stambh is optional but involves narrow, steep internal stairs. There's no requirement to climb, and you can happily admire the monuments from ground level, but comfortable shoes make the day far more pleasant.
Yes. Because it's a private car tour, you set the pace, take breaks when you like, and skip any climb that feels too much, which suits both families with kids and older travelers. The long drive each way means the car time is the main thing to plan around, so bring snacks and water for little ones. The wide open fort spaces are great for children who like a bit of room to roam.
The most comfortable months are October to March, when Rajasthan's days are pleasant and clear. From April to June it can get very hot, so an early start is wise to beat the midday sun at the exposed hilltop fort. Setting off early from Udaipur also gives you softer light for photos and a fuller day at the site.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, light breathable clothing, and bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as much of the fort is open and shadeless. A refillable water bottle is essential, especially in warmer months. As several monuments include temples, modest dress that covers shoulders and knees is respectful and appreciated at sacred spots within the complex.
The Rajasthani thali is offered as an optional add-on at a local restaurant rather than being built into the base price. It's a lovely way to try authentic Mewari dishes mid-trip, and your guide or chauffeur can recommend a good spot. If you'd rather, you can also just grab a lighter bite, since the meal is entirely up to you.
Absolutely. Rajasthani cuisine is richly vegetarian, so a traditional thali will typically feature dals, seasonal vegetables, breads and sweets without any meat. Just let your guide know your preferences and any allergies, and they can steer you to suitable dishes. Vegetarian, vegan and Jain-friendly options are widely available in this region.
It's outstanding. The Vijay Stambh and Kirti Stambh are dramatic vertical landmarks, while Rana Kumbha Palace offers atmospheric ruins and long views over the plains. Morning and late-afternoon light are especially flattering on the honey-colored stone. Your private pace means you can linger at a viewpoint for that perfect shot without holding up a group.
This is a private day trip from Udaipur, so your chauffeur meets you and departs from the city with your group. When booking, share your Udaipur hotel or accommodation details so pickup can be arranged smoothly. Because it's private, the timing has some flexibility around an early departure to make the most of the day.
Chittorgarh is a heritage-and-history day out focused on one epic fort, ideal if Rajput legends and monuments excite you. If you'd prefer temples and craftsmanship instead, the Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur Temple day trip is a superb alternative. To stay in the city, the full-day Udaipur sightseeing tour with a guide covers the lakes and palaces.
Yes. Traveling by private AC car with a vetted chauffeur and a local guide at the fort makes this a relaxed, low-stress option, whether you're solo, a couple or a small group. There's no pressure of a large group and no navigating public transport for a long rural drive. If you'd like something more intimate in town too, consider the private full-day sightseeing tour with a tour guide.
You can book online and you'll receive confirmation for the 8-hour private Chittorgarh day trip by car at US$90. Share your Udaipur accommodation and preferred start time so the driver and guide can be arranged. It's best to book a day or two ahead so your private car and English-speaking guide are reserved for your chosen date.
