Full description
This is a 5-hour experience from Ubud, built around Mount Batur. It is run by Your Bali Trekking Tour, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Mount Batur is an active volcano of 1,717 metres standing inside a much older caldera, with Lake Batur on the floor of it. Sunrise treks start from Toya Bungkah on the lake shore, climb for around two hours on volcanic sand and loose rock, and aim to be on the rim by about 5:30, since the sun comes up between 6:00 and 6:30 depending on the month, behind the cone of Mount Agung to the east. The summit before dawn is regularly 8 to 12°C with wind, so a real warm layer matters more than anything else you pack. Trekking is run through the local village association, which is why every tour, ours included, comes with a guide, and most mornings end at the hot springs on the lake shore. Jeep and ATV versions drive to a viewpoint on the flank of the volcano for the same sunrise and skip the climb, which is the right choice for knees, small children and anyone who did not sleep. In the wet season, November to March, the top is often inside cloud at dawn and there is no refund for weather.

We had a great time hiking up my Batur to see a beautiful sunset. We completed the hike very quickly so had to wait a long time for the sunrise and would've prefered a later pickup and more sleep. So if you're in good shape it might be worth asking them

Jay was a great guide!! Very good at taking photos. Do note that this is a tricky hike with lots of steep climbs. Definitely worth it and definitely verrrrry cold at the top - take a jacket!

We had a fabulous time with amazing views at the top! Singgih was a brilliant driver who got us there and back safely and Maggi was an amazing guide providing lots of information on the mountain whilst ensuring we were okay the whole way up. Highly recommend :)
Very well organised, from accommodation pick up to meeting with our group guide, Jay. Loved how each guide had a small group to lead which felt more intimate. We went on a cloudy day and witnessed about 15 minutes of the sunrise before clouds rolled over. It was still stunning though. Jay took us to some other cool spots at the top of the hike. Jay used his judgement to have us walk on the motorbike path as some of our group were struggling with going downhill on the steep hiking trail. Overall an amazing activity and one of the highlights of our time in Bali!
