This is a 7-hour experience from Ubud, built around Mount Batur. It is run by Your Bali Trekking Tour, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Mount Batur is an active volcano of 1,717 metres standing inside a much older caldera, with Lake Batur on the floor of it. Sunrise treks start from Toya Bungkah on the lake shore, climb for around two hours on volcanic sand and loose rock, and aim to be on the rim by about 5:30, since the sun comes up between 6:00 and 6:30 depending on the month, behind the cone of Mount Agung to the east. The summit before dawn is regularly 8 to 12°C with wind, so a real warm layer matters more than anything else you pack. Trekking is run through the local village association, which is why every tour, ours included, comes with a guide, and most mornings end at the hot springs on the lake shore. Jeep and ATV versions drive to a viewpoint on the flank of the volcano for the same sunrise and skip the climb, which is the right choice for knees, small children and anyone who did not sleep. In the wet season, November to March, the top is often inside cloud at dawn and there is no refund for weather.

This was one of the best nights/mornings ever! The transport went smoothly; the driver was very nice. You get coffee with cookies before starting, and for the hike a lantern and walking stick. Amazing my driver was really friendly and made me feel very safe and welcome as a solo traveller. He was very punctual and provided a wonderful service overall. The lovely lady who took us up the mountain (our guide) was very considerate of our groups fitness levels and stopped regularly for breaks and warned us of difficulties along the way. She was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of extra information on the mountains and volcanoes. She was a real laugh as well which made the whole trek feel as though you were amongst friends even though we all began as strangers. Couldn’t recommend both
Our driver Bagonk arrived exactly at the pre-arranged time of 2.20am. He was pleasant and communicated clearly both via messaging and in person. He was helpful when we decided we wanted to leave the group tour after the hot spring to due to tiredness, ensuring we safely got home. Our trekking guide Roman was entertaining and made the experience fun. He adjusted his pace to suit the group, which I appreciated. Overall, this activity is well organised and runs smoothly.
An amazing morning! Our guide up the mountain was very helpful and supportive during the more challenging bits and our driver for the morning, Bayu, was very attentive and a great help between the different locations.

Jeri Parta was absolutely amazing throughout the entire hike! He was very calm, patient and attentive, always checking to make sure everyone was okay and asking if anyone needed a break. My girlfriend found some parts of the hike quite difficult, and Jeri was always there to help her, even holding her hand and guiding her through the most challenging sections. The guides on this tour were excellent! Alia was so lovely and kind and made us feel very safe. Our driver Deny was also really great, he was always ready and waiting for us and played some great tunes in the car too! The weather was fairly cloudy but we still saw some of the sunrise - but nonetheless it was a very well organised tour which I would recommend!
